High Bentham: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across High Bentham and the rest of North Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the engine has not been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in. A single call our way is sufficient: our technicians shall show you what follows from here. Make this first.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Started anyway? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically cannot run, so the person stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. People get that confused. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off too. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank then into exactly those parts.
  • Never add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely gives you a larger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort, and we would sooner drive to a difficult spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Station Road, put the hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Have your position ready before you ring. A postcode beginning LA2 7 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, and also if the engine has run — the three facts determine the entire job. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The run in is what drew weakened diesel through the pump. Standing still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, parked at Bentham all day, waits idle in your tank while it waits. Ring us first — before your keys go in.

Three answers determine most of the work: what was put in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them when we arrive at the car in the car park by Black Bull. After that the tainted mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are cleaned, and where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After new diesel is in and your system primed, our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs properly before you pull away.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Audi A6 parked close to Bentham Town Hall hardly two streets on. Ring us, and leave it off. A short distance does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and the pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence cleaning your lines rather than only clearing that tank.

Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a misfilled diesel Volvo XC60 telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by Methodist Church or anywhere else, and do not restart the vehicle to find a better location.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: we flush it, and take the filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you will get — drain the car, refill with new diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Skoda Superb near St Boniface and it'll start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds sensible. Then the motor sucks the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Most of the job begins at a forecourt, meaning a good share of that is done there. The drain generally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere our engineers work, and often.

Nowhere else except the forecourt can it be caught with your engine still untouched. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Worth it. Moving it four lengths doesn't warrant starting it.

Areas we serve around High Bentham

Greystonegill, Low Bentham, Green, Burton in Lonsdale, Old Wennington — all of these on the rounds that carry us out to High Bentham too, a riverside town.

There are pages for most places in North Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from that list says nothing about whether our engineers come. Close to a border, or somewhere a satnav can't find? Contact us to ask rather than presuming.

The area the page covers sits on the map. Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

High Bentham: broken down where you pulled up

The chance to pull over anywhere suitable does not fall to everybody. If you realised after setting off and landed on the verge beside King Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a normal call for us rather than an odd one.

Fine right there? Wait with it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. A van heading to an inconvenient spot is no bother for us, and it's much better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

This is where the local M6 comes in, under 10 miles from High Bentham. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the first exit that is sensible, pull up there, and never restart the vehicle to move it. It alters what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Where is High Bentham?

High Bentham is a town situated in the valley of the River Wenning in North Yorkshire, with a population of around 2336 people. High Bentham has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most common, and it is located near the towns of Low Bentham and Lancaster. High Bentham sits at an elevation of 105 metres, close to the villages of Greystonegill and Green. High Bentham is approximately 206 miles from London, making it a relatively distant town from the capital.

The job around High Bentham, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
  • The polluted mixture comes from that tank.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what caused the problem, so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
  • We put new diesel in and prime the system.
  • The motor is started and checked to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has your car ready to set off. Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around High Bentham is a distinct job

Do not start it: that first rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits instead.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own High Bentham page. Both are ours to deal with.

High Bentham prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around High Bentham

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in High Bentham?

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then keep it off. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more frequently than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. The pump still has to put up with it, as your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Don't turn your engine back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
