Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in High Possil? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across High Possil and the rest of Glasgow City. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Call us before anything else starts, so you will know what follows next.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the car. Fired up regardless? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Drivers get that backwards. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel performs two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it lubricates that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is often all it takes to prime that system, which pulls that petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so never put diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has never moved is the simplest one to handle, and we would much rather travel to an odd place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Castlebay Street, turn the hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Before you ring, get your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting G22 7 — that's what decides whether the van turns up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how many litres, and if your car has run. Those three details settle the entire visit.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Taking it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has put real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return leg would close to double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can sit at Possilpark & Parkhouse perfectly well. Phone from the platform if easier; standing over us whilst our engineers work is not required.

You'll be advised to move the vehicle clear of that gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags at the local primary school, a misfuelled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime draws more petrol through the fuel filter on to the pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle waits, since a diesel Ford Focus left outside Glasgow Club Milton is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

Leave the Mercedes C-Class by Milton Library and Learning Centre then call us. We are direct about not driving on since a worn-out pump sheds, and what it sheds travels on with the fuel to your injectors downstream.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 3008 that got close to Roman Head needs the system purged, not emptied.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in High Possil

Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Pumps are where the job often kicks off, and where a fair part of it closes. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at BP that is typically where this drain happens.

A forecourt is the only location this gets stopped before your engine has started. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where the vehicle is. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The staff will generally happily wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Coverage in High Possil

Milton, Lambhill, Cadder, Parkhouse, Possil Park — every one of these on the runs that carry us across to High Possil itself, a residential suburb.

Our engineers still come. Those names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns in Glasgow City, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Assuming is the mistake to avoid, above all on the border or anywhere a satnav gets lost. Phone to ask.

The map is the area the page includes. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our engineers serve, and none of it needs your vehicle to move to us.

High Possil: stuck where you parked

Some people get no sensible place to pull in whatsoever. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Skerray Quadrant as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Whether you stay with the vehicle or stand clear of it hangs on if being there feels sensible. Don't start up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into the fuel system. A technician coming to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it is a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where your M8 comes in — under 3 miles away from High Possil. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It alters what we bring.

The job in High Possil, step by step

  • The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • We empty the tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • Once it's turned on, we make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around High Possil is a different job

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is unchanged — don't crank it — yet this fault isn't. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around High Possil has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. We handle both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in High Possil

One price would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around High Possil

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in High Possil?

Yes, and it is where a fair part of this work gets done. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more regularly than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Your pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Standing next to it?

The engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the vehicle remain that way. This is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists expect, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
