High Shields: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across High Shields and the remainder of Tyne and Wear. The very first thing to do is not to start the engine. While your engine has not been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in. We can show you what the following part is. Contact us — that goes ahead of anything else.
Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Don't crank it — and never believe it if it runs. Here is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just can't run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It is not all right. It's grinding your fuel system while you drive.
- Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those components.
- Never dilute it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and we'd rather travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Laygate Place, turn those hazards on then leave the car there.
- Have your position prepared before you phone. A postcode starting NE33 5 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van showing up and the van circling.
- Three facts decide your whole visit: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate measure involved, plus if it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.
The drive in is what pulled weakened diesel through your pump. Sitting still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left outside Brockley Whins all day, waits idle in your tank while it waits. Phone first — before the keys turn.
A passer-by will tell you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and deal with it later. Don't. A misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by Laygate Community School is an inconvenience; the same vehicle fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past your filter then into your pump. Leave it there, let them grumble, and call us.
Nothing gets worse while it stands. Whatever your diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Portberry Memorial Park, it's doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but never drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.
Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfilled diesel Mercedes E-Class telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Al Azhar Mosque or anywhere else, and do not start it to find a better location.
By this point the tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel BMW 1 Series that made it near Holy Trinity Church needs your circuit cleared, not cleared.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
Most of the work begins at the pump, so a large part of that gets done there. The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Asda? Given the site's permission, that's a place our engineers work, and often.
Before your engine has fired — a forecourt is the one spot it gets caught. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys.
The attendants will generally happily push the vehicle out from the pump so the next customer can get through. That is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.
Places our vans serve in High Shields
Mill Dam, Tyne Dock, South Shields, Westoe, Cauldwell — each of them on our trips that bring us over to High Shields itself, a residential suburb.
There are separate pages for the majority of towns around Tyne and Wear, and the ones listed above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing about whether we come. Close to the boundary, or anywhere your phone can't find? Ring us and enquire instead of presuming.
The ground the page includes is on the map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory our engineers cover, and none of that needs the car to come to us.
Roadside breakdowns across High Shields
Not everybody has the opportunity to stop anywhere sensible. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Brunswick Street because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.
Whether you remain by the motor or move clear of it hangs on if sitting nearby seems wise. Do not start up your engine to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into your fuel system. A van coming to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it's far better for your car than pressing on.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles
Your A194(M) is the one which counts now, and it runs under 5 miles from High Shields. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Come off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and don't start the car to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you call. What our engineers bring changes.
High Shields itself
High Shields is a coastal suburban area in Tyne and Wear, situated near the mouth of the River Tyne. High Shields has a relatively low elevation of 13 metres above sea level and is located approximately 6.4 miles from Sunderland. High Shields is characterized by its predominant flat housing and is close to nearby places such as Mill Dam and Tyne Dock. High Shields is part of the larger urban area in the North East of England, with London being around 246.6 miles away.
Our visit in High Shields, step by step
- The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
- The tank gets cleared of it.
- What is left in your system shouldn't be what created the problem, and so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
- Our technicians pour new diesel in and prime the system.
- The engine is started and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
That leaves the car ready to set off. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very unusual.
A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around High Shields
The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up instead.
We cover both, and AdBlue removal around High Shields has its own page with the detail — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.
High Shields pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain
One number wouldn't be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:
- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.
High Shields motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
I am on a forecourt around High Shields. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Yes, and it's where a large share of this work gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement we attend Esso and the other forecourts locally regularly.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Whether your motor has run counts much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through the system.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. It is recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
It's not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a different issue from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Your pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Leave the engine switched off.
Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
