Petrol in Diesel

High Town: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout High Town and the remainder of Staffordshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Ring us so our engineers shall explain what follows from here before you attempt much else.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Turned on all the same? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally can't run, so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for a couple of miles. Most people get that muddled. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it burns it protects your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which carries this petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Smalley Close, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Keep your whereabouts ready before you phone. A postcode that starts WS12 4 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van arriving and our van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, approximately how many litres, and whether your car has been turned over. Those replies determine all that happens next.

Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel in a tank is harmless, and so a diesel Volkswagen Golf left at Hednesford this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew weakened diesel through your pump was the trip in. Call us before you set off to collect the vehicle.

The phone call our technicians like goes like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now turned off outside Tesco. What we're truly asking is how much fuel the pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

Do not chance it. The journey home from The Bridge Inn is quite possible, which is exactly the problem — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the parts the fuel is supposed to protect. Call us, and let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it sits.

Here's the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the normal Skelly call — a diesel Audi A4, out there without fuss and back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it escapes past those clearances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was designed about. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

The pump rests before the injectors, so whatever a wearing one loses passes downstream with your fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Call us, then leave the diesel Ford Focus where it's by St Chad.

Draining petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

The work begins at the pump, mostly. Quite often it finishes at one too. Still at Texaco? Then that's usually where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

At a garage, this gets stopped with the motor never started, and no place else manages it. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key.

Move it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Firing the car just to roll four car lengths isn't.

Service in High Town

These same runs take us to West Hill, Hednesford, Chadsmoor, Hill Top and Church Hill as well as High Town, which is a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. The places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places around Staffordshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Contact us to check rather than guessing — boundaries above all, and anywhere the satnav tends to struggle with.

Look at this map for the ground included on this page. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the vehicle never needs to move to us.

Roadside breakdowns around High Town

A chance to pull in somewhere safe does not come to everyone. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Belt Road as you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Whether you stay by the car or move clear of it depends on whether staying there feels safe. Never fire it up to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into your fuel system. A van coming to a tricky location is no trouble for us, and it is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Run it already? Stop, then check below

The local M6 Toll is the road which counts now, and lies under 3 miles from High Town. A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they arrive are normally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Take the first junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't start it to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring differs.

Where is High Town?

High Town is a suburban area in Staffordshire, situated on the riverside with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. High Town sits at an elevation of 172 metres, close to the nearby settlements of West Hill, Hednesford, and Chadsmoor. High Town is located near the city of Lichfield, which is approximately 7.8 miles away, and is part of the wider West Midlands region. High Town has a population of around 5460 residents.

Our visit in High Town, step by step

  • The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • The tank gets drained of it.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that started the issue.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • The motor is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

High Town AdBlue removal is a different matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas the problem underneath it's a distinct one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own High Town page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in High Town

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in High Town

At a petrol station around High Town, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair share of this work takes place there, so yes. Our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through your fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and the car, still together?

Keep it turned off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
