Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Higher Town?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Higher Town and the remainder of Somerset. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Contact us so our engineers shall show you what happens from here before you try much else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Do not start it — and never depend on it if it starts. This is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and pulls away without complaint for a few miles. It isn't okay. It's grinding the fuel system as you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition is left off too — switch it on and you usually prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for exactly those components.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Church Road, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Before you ring, gather your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts TA24 5 — that's what determines whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • What went in, roughly how many litres, and also if the car has fired — these three details determine your whole call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Do not run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through your injection pump in real volume on the road in, and the way back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over that Volkswagen Passat outside the nearest station whilst the work happens, and we would far rather talk to you tonight than learn on Monday.

Twenty to nine. Outside St Michael's Church of England First School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put the hazard lights on, leave your engine alone, then ring us. You could think three miles is nothing, in your BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a drive taken in a rush needs a great deal of that.

Here is the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the usual Blenheim Gardens call — a diesel Dacia Duster, out there without a murmur and back down on power, rough at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it leaks past those clearances rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was engineered around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and parked your diesel Audi A3 up near St Michael's Church a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us and leave the vehicle off. The short drive truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, so diluted fuel has arrived at the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our technicians flush the lines rather than only emptying that tank.

Drain it then put fresh diesel in — that is the advice you'll get, usually from somebody certain, and it's only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Vauxhall Insignia near Zigzag footpath and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What happens next is the problem: your engine immediately pulls the petrol still resting in the filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush the system and take the fuel filter off where the car has a working one, which is the difference between your car being repaired and the car simply starting.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Higher Town

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

The work begins at the pump, generally. Regularly the job finishes at one as well. Our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, and so if you are still at Texaco that's typically where the drain gets done.

The forecourt is the only setting it gets caught before the motor has started. Our technicians can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Well worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Places we serve near Higher Town

Higher Town is a residential suburb, and our technicians head out to it and to the villages near it on those same trips: Minehead, Periton, Woodcombe, Alcombe and Bratton.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns across Somerset have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Assuming is the habit to avoid, especially on a border or anywhere your satnav struggles. Ring us to ask.

The patch this page covers is on the map. We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle never needs to come to us.

Stuck on the roadside around Higher Town

Not everyone gets a sensible spot to stop. If you noticed after setting off and ended up on the verge on Ballfield Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a routine call for us and not an unusual one.

Out of the car when it isn't safe to wait inside, with it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Carrying on causes the car far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult place, and that's no problem for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

This is where the local M5 comes in, under 25 miles out of Higher Town. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the next safe junction, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. It changes what we bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Where's Higher Town?

Higher Town is a suburban area situated on the coast of Somerset, with nearby towns including Minehead and Periton. Higher Town has a relatively low elevation of 64 metres and is located near the villages of Woodcombe. Higher Town is characterized by a high proportion of flat housing, reflecting its development as a residential area.

What happens when our engineers reach you in Higher Town

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • The tainted fuel comes out of that tank.
  • We rinse your fuel lines and clear the filter, so what's left in the fuel system isn't what started the problem.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • Once it is fired up, we check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.

Higher Town AdBlue removal is a separate problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this fault beneath it is a distinct one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Higher Town page. Both are ours to deal with.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Higher Town

Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Higher Town

I'm on a forecourt around Higher Town. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work gets done. Regularly, provided the site consents: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something we answer straight away.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving moves the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. That tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Never switch it back on.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car remain that way. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers assume.
