Highfield: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Highfield and the remainder of South Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While your engine has not run and the fuel is still inside the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Call us and then our technicians will explain what comes from here before you try any more.
Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Never start it. Started all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally cannot run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a couple of miles. Most people get that reversed. It is not all right — that fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
- Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which moves that petrol out of the tank then into exactly those components.
- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- A car that has not moved is the quickest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Cherry Street? Hazards on, and leave it there. An awkward place suits us better than a started diesel.
- Before you phone, gather your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts S2 4 — that's what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, approximately how many litres, and also if the motor has run. These three details shape your whole call-out.
How far you travelled is what our engineers query, not how long the vehicle has been standing — and here is why. Diesel has two roles on its way through an engine: it burns, and before burning it lubricates its injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a quick refuel on the way in, it dawning on you around eleven, and a diesel Skoda Octavia left outside Sheffield since quarter past eight means those couple of miles were done with your pump running on a fuel stripped of most of its protection. Phone and keep it right where it sits.
We will come out to you, drain that tank, purge the fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into the diesel BMW 3 Series in Highfield and you are sat at Asda with a boot loaded with shopping, ring us — and never fire it up a second time to get out of the bay. A mile or so at light throttle uses very little diesel, which is why such jobs tend to be the easy jobs.
The parts that should be getting protected are wearing down instead, and your motor gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and pulls away just fine. Chance the drive home from The Railway Hotel? Don't. Phone us then leave the Ford Focus where it stands.
The slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than sloppy. New locations see most of it for that reason. So: topped up by Joe Shaw without thinking, in a diesel Audi A6 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody notices, and mileage decides how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.
Purged, not drained — that's what a diesel Kia Sportage which got as far as Legends of the Lane needs. Running a diesel puts the blend into your filter, your lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with that tank, and so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the damage.
Draining petrol from a diesel at the forecourt
Much of the work starts at a forecourt, which means a good part of it ends up completed there. Still at BP? Then that is typically where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.
A forecourt is the single place this is stopped before your motor has fired. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key.
The attendants will usually happily wheel it away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing. Firing the car to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.
Can our technicians cover your side of Highfield?
Highfield is a residential suburb, and we head out to it and to the areas by it on the same journeys: Lowfield, Little Sheffield, Heeley, Sharrow Head and Sharrow.
We still come. Those places above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most towns across South Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Close to a boundary, or anywhere your phone struggles with? Contact us to check instead of guessing.
The area the page spans appears on this map. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the car doesn't need to move to us.
Highfield: broken down where you parked
Not everyone gets the chance to pull over anywhere safe. If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge beside Shoreham Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that's a routine call for us instead of a rare one.
Okay right there? Sit by it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled. We'll send the van to a difficult spot without any bother, and for the car that is far better than driving on.
Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles
Your M1 is the road that counts now, and it runs under 5 miles from Highfield. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.
Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the next safe junction then turn off. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under a mile to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring changes.
Where is Highfield?
Highfield is a suburban area located on the riverside in South Yorkshire, with a mix of terraced housing and a population of around 11837 residents. Highfield sits at an elevation of 74 metres, close to the city centre of Sheffield, which is approximately 0.9 miles away. Highfield is near other local places such as Lowfield, Little Sheffield, and Heeley, and is part of the larger Sheffield urban area. Highfield is situated in a region with a strong industrial heritage, near the confluence of several major rivers.
Once our technicians reach you in Highfield: what we do
- Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses alter what the work really is.
- Out comes the tainted fuel.
- Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what is left in the system is not what created the trouble.
- Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.
- Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.
At that point it's ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.
Highfield AdBlue removal is a different job
The issue isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — don't crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.
Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Highfield page. Both are ours to deal with.
Highfield pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, since the job isn't one job. What changes it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much that tank holds.
- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?
Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Highfield
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Highfield?
Yes, and it is where a fair part of this work happens. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more often than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate problem. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
Keep the car switched off.
Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists expect.
