Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Highgate

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Highgate and the rest of Greater London. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. When your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Just one ring to us will be plenty: our engineers will explain what follows after this. Try that right away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Do not fire it up — and don't believe it if it does start. Here is the thing people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel usually just can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and moves off quite happily for a few miles. It's not okay. It's wearing out the fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be as well. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it greases your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is commonly enough to prime your system, which moves the petrol out of your tank and into just those components.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so do not add diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Church Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started diesel.
  • The van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting N6 4, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you call.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, roughly how much, and if the motor has been run. The answers decide whatever follows.

Do not drive it home. The commute has already forced a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the trip back would more or less double it for no reason at all. Ring us from the platform if that's simpler. Our engineers don't need you standing over the car at Upper Holloway while our engineers work, and we'd far rather hear from you tonight than discover on Monday.

It will fire up. It will pull away perfectly well. That's the issue, because a diesel on a diluted tank runs generally whilst wearing the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, don't try the drive home from The Highgate Inn — leave the Audi A4 then phone.

Nothing is getting worse while it sits. Whatever the diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Tatham's Field, it is doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but never drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left the diesel BMW 5 Series up near All Saints a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Call us and leave the vehicle off. The short distance really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has reached the fuel filter and your pump — which is why we clean the fuel lines instead of only draining that tank.

Most of these happen somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than sloppy — practically no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Ford Kuga, a fill-up by Mallinson Sports Centre that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the injectors.

Draining petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

Forecourts are where the work usually kicks off, and where a fair chunk of that finishes. Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Esso that's generally where this drain takes place.

Before your motor has fired — a forecourt is the single place this gets halted. We can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

The staff will normally happily push the car clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. It is worth doing. Rolling it four bays doesn't warrant starting the motor.

Highgate plus the places beside it

These same runs take us to Fortis Green, Cranley Gardens, Parliament Hill, East Finchley and Crouch End as well as Highgate, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and the majority of places across Greater London have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Contact us to ask instead of guessing, especially when you are on a border or anywhere the satnav misreads.

Use the map for the ground included here. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers work on, and none of it requires the car to move to us.

Roadside call-outs across Highgate

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere sensible. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge on View Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a common call for us rather than an unusual one.

Sit beside the car when it is safe to be inside, and out of the car when it's not. Don't restart it to reach a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the system. Pressing on causes the car far more harm than a technician driving out to a tricky place, and that's no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has rolled

Here is where the M1 comes in, under 5 miles from Highgate. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are usually lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.

Don't restart it to move it. Pull off at the first sensible exit and turn off. It changes what we bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

A bit about Highgate

Highgate is a suburban area in northern London, situated on a ridge at an elevation of around 90 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Highgate is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and is located near the riverside, with nearby places including Fortis Green, Cranley Gardens, and Parliament Hill. Highgate has a population of approximately 5946 residents and is positioned about 5 miles from central London.

Our visit around Highgate, step by step

  • Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • Out flows the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • When it is turned on, our engineers confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Then it is ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Highgate?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the problem beneath it is a different one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Highgate page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Highgate

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page truthfully, since the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank holds.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Highgate

Fuel drains on a Highgate petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a good part of this work happens. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians work at Gulf and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more often than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

Shut off is how the car remains.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people assume, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.
