Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Highlands Village

With your tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Across Highlands Village and the rest of Greater London, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Ring us and our team shall explain what comes next before you attempt much else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never fire it up — and do not believe it when it runs. Here is the part motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, idles and drives off quite happily for several miles. It is not okay. It is wearing out that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — your injection pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: switching it on is usually sufficient to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Highlands Avenue, anywhere — an odd location for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
  • A van arriving rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting N21 1, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you phone.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, about how many litres, plus if the motor has been turned over. The replies shape everything that comes after.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, parked at Grange Park since this morning? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is dormant. It was the run in that pulled thinned diesel through your pump. Phone us before you fetch it.

Nothing warns you, because from the driver's seat there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt entirely normal on the way back from Eversley Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor mostly refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump does its work without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built bleeds past tolerances instead, leaving the engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built around. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through — that is the whole mechanism. It accounts for the usual Blake Court Garden call too: a diesel Audi A4 that drove out without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, parked close to Highlands Village Hall. For a diesel Mercedes C-Class whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Call us, and let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get cleaned and not just the tank cleared.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about the diesel Ford Kuga by St Peter's Church. You'll not know how full that tank was. Barely anyone does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on the spot all the same. Our engineers ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Highlands Village

Clearing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

A good chunk of this work gets completed at a forecourt, since that is where it usually starts. If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that's usually where the drain takes place — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can this be caught with your motor still untouched. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and your lines along with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians deal with it where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Well worth doing. Cranking it just to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Service in Highlands Village

Those same trips get us to Grange Park, Oakwood, Worlds End, Winchmore Hill and Enfield along with Highlands Village, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and the majority of places around Greater London have a page of their own somewhere on our site. On the boundary, or somewhere your phone misreads? Ring us to ask instead of presuming.

The area this page spans appears on this map. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers work on, and none of it requires the car to come to us.

Stranded at the roadside anywhere around Highlands Village?

Not everyone gets a sensible place to stop. A common call for us rather than an unusual one: noticed after setting off, finished up by the verge of Donovan Place or at a lay-by with the hazards on.

Out of the vehicle while it is not wise to sit in it, by it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Carrying on causes the car far more harm than a van coming out to an awkward place, and that is no bother for us.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M25 comes in, under 5 miles out of Highlands Village. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

A little about Highlands Village

Highlands Village is a suburban area in Greater London, situated lakeside with an elevation of 64 metres. Highlands Village lies approximately 9.5 miles from central London, near neighbouring areas such as Grange Park and Oakwood. Highlands Village has a population of around 6366 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Highlands Village is also close to Worlds End, another local suburban area.

What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you in Highlands Village

  • Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • Our engineers drain your tank of the contaminated fuel.
  • We rinse the lines and clear your filter, so what is remaining in your system is not what caused the problem.
  • The system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Our engineers do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed soon, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Highlands Village

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine remains off — while this issue beneath it's a separate one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Highlands Village page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Highlands Village

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a technician.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Highlands Village

Fuel drains on a Highlands Village petrol station forecourt

A good part of this work gets done there, so yes. Our technicians work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more often than motorists assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is.

You, and the car, still together?

The engine stays off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists fear.
