Petrol in Diesel

Hill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still in that tank and the engine has not run, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has come to rest in Hill or the rest of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. We shall show you what the next part is. Call us — this comes before all else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it — and don't depend on it if it starts. That is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel usually just can't run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives away just fine for several miles. It's not okay. It is wearing that fuel system as you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition stays off too — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and we would sooner get to a tricky location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Hill Lane, turn the hazards on then leave the car there.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode starting SO15 5, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.
  • Three details determine the entire call-out: the stuff you tipped in, the rough volume of it, plus if anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A fair chunk of this job ends up completed at a pump, since that's where it often kicks off. We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, so if you're still at BP that is normally where this drain gets done.

Before the motor has started — a garage is the single location this gets stopped. We can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

The staff will usually offer to push the car out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Coverage near Hill

Polygon, Freemantle, Banisters Park, Bedford Place, Bellevue — all of them on the runs that carry us out to Hill itself, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places around Hampshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing about if we come. Close to the boundary, or anywhere the satnav can't find? Ring us and enquire instead of guessing.

Check the map for the ground covered here. The car doesn't need to move to us. Our technicians work across all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Nothing tells you, because from the driver's seat there is nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Mercedes C-Class will have seemed completely normal on the way back from Springhill Catholic Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump works without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

What our technicians will want to know is if the trip there was brief and chilly, since that is where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and whatever doesn't burn can slip past the rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Dacia Duster sitting in the parking area outside The Winston Hotel with a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing worsens whilst it sits, so leave the vehicle there overnight then phone us in the morning.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the run to Rollesbrook Greenway, look at your tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the fine gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every extra mile the diesel Vauxhall Astra covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, call us.

A car you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the amount of petrol arriving at the fuel injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck accepts the smaller petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so unfamiliar spots see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, near Central Baptist Church or not, and we will get to the Ford Kuga.

Flushed, not drained — that is what a diesel BMW X1 which got as far as UCKG HelpCentre needs. Running a diesel puts that mixture into your filter, your lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with your tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the trouble.

Broken down on the roadside around Hill

Not everybody has the chance to pull over somewhere sensible. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Landguard Road since you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Okay where you are? Remain beside it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it. Do not fire up the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into the fuel system. Our van heading to a difficult place is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

The local M271 is the one which counts now, and sits under 3 miles from Hill. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never start it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible exit then switch off. Long run? Anything approaching the under a mile to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in our van.

A bit about Hill

Hill is a suburban area located on the coast of Hampshire, near the city of Southampton. Hill sits at a low elevation of 16 metres, with many of its residents living in flats. Hill is close to other nearby places such as Polygon, Freemantle, and Banisters Park, and is situated approximately 69 miles from London.

The call-out around Hill, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The tank gets emptied completely.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • Our engineers turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Hill AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

The issue isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — don't fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Hill has its own page with the details — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Hill

Truthfully, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much that tank holds.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel questions from Hill motorists

Fuel drains on a Hill petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the problem along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

The motor stays off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
