Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hill Ridware? Don't Start It
If you have not turned on the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has stopped in Hill Ridware or the rest of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Contact us before all else happens, and you'll see what comes after that.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do first
- Don't start the vehicle — and don't depend on it if it runs. Here is the thing motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel generally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and pulls away just fine for several miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing your fuel system as you drive.
- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be too: turning it on is often enough to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
- Do not pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that guidance implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on School Lane? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A difficult location suits us better than a started engine.
- The van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning WS15 3, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you phone.
- Three facts shape your whole job: the fuel you poured in, the rough volume of it, and whether anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel
The job kicks off at a forecourt, usually. Often enough it finishes there too. We work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at Esso that's normally where the drain happens.
Nowhere else but a garage can the mistake be halted with your engine still unstarted. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where the vehicle stands.
Out from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Well worth it. Starting it just to roll four car lengths isn't.
Places we cover near Hill Ridware
These same rounds bring us to Rake End, Mavesyn Ridware, Pipe Ridware, Armitage and Handsacre besides Hill Ridware, which is a rural village.
If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations across Staffordshire, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours. Presuming is the thing to resist, above all on a border or somewhere your satnav struggles. Call us and ask.
Use our map for the patch covered on this page. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle never needs to travel to us.
You will be told to move the car clear of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. On the zig-zags at Henry Chadwick Primary School, a misfilled Peugeot 3008 running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol beyond the filter towards your pump. Let them complain. Ring us.
Nothing gets worse while it stands. Whatever the diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Cawarden Springs Wood, it is doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but do not drive it home to buy yourself any.
Draining your Mercedes A-Class, changing your filter where there is a usable one, purging the lines, putting clean fuel through the entire circuit: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of it resting in your lines rather than in your tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from near Mavesyn Ridware Village Hall — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park beside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, so the location itself is hardly ever the issue. A narrow parking spot trumps a vehicle driven somewhere more convenient.
A car you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the amount of petrol reaching the injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck accepts the smaller petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, so new locations see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, near Church of St Nicholas, Mavesyn Ridware or not, and we'll come to the Audi Q5.
By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that mix goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Volvo XC60 that got near St. John the Baptist Church needs its system cleared. Emptying isn't the same thing.
Broken down at the kerbside near Hill Ridware
The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe doesn't come to everyone. A routine call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge of Chadwick Crescent or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.
Okay there? Sit by it. Not safe? Step out and away from it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. We'll bring the van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's much better than pressing on.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles
Here is where your M6 Toll comes into it — under 10 miles from Hill Ridware. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.
The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our engineers bring changes.

Once we arrive with you in Hill Ridware: what follows
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
- That tank is drained completely.
- Our engineers flush the fuel lines and clean the filter, so what's left in the fuel system isn't what started the problem.
- Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- The engine is started and tested to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.
At that point it is ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted early, and since all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a garage.
Hill Ridware AdBlue removal is a distinct job
If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — do not fire it up — yet the problem isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.
Both are ours. There is a separate Hill Ridware page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Hill Ridware
Our technicians cannot put one number on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What changes it:
- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much the tank can hold.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?
A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.
Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Hill Ridware
At a petrol station in Hill Ridware, can you do a fuel drain there?
Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement we attend Tesco and the other forecourts around town regularly.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Whether your motor has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. What determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more frequently than motorists assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Still with the vehicle?
Leave the car turned off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
