Hill Top: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Hill Top and the remainder of Derbyshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Just one call to us is sufficient: our engineers can show you what happens from here. Do it straight away.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- While you drive, your pump and the injectors suffer. That is why you do not start the vehicle, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — the high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition alone too: flicking it on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those components.
- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes — so do not pour diesel on top to thin it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- A motor that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Gosforth Lane? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An odd spot suits us better than a started diesel.
- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning S18 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.
- Three answers settle the entire call-out: the liquid you put in, the rough measure involved, plus if it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt
Much of this job starts at a forecourt, so a large portion of that ends up finished there. We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent, so if you're still at Sainsbury's that is generally where the drain gets done.
Nowhere else but a forecourt can it be stopped with the motor still unrun. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key.
Attendants will generally help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the help. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.
Areas we reach near Hill Top
As a residential suburb, Hill Top sees a regular visit, while the villages nearby come with it on the same run: Hallowes and Gosforth Valley, Dronfield and Summerwood Top, Snape Hill.
If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for nearly all places across Derbyshire, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours. Call us to enquire rather than presuming, especially where you are on a border or somewhere a satnav struggles with.
The patch the page covers is on this map. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your vehicle never needs to come to us.
Twenty to nine. Outside Dronfield Infant School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Turn your hazards on, leave your engine alone, then phone. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a run taken in a hurry demands a great deal of it.
Your Mercedes C-Class remains where it is in the car park by Hyde Park Inn for the whole job, which typically goes like this. First our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, given that most of the work rests on those replies. The tank is emptied of the polluted blend, the lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With new diesel in and your system bled, the vehicle is fired up and tested, and once it is running smoothly you pull away.
Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how the drive to Hilltop Playing Field went, that tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the precision components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Vauxhall Astra went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off and ring us.
Emptying the Volkswagen Polo, changing your filter where there is a workable one, purging the fuel lines, putting clean fuel through the entire circuit: that is this job, and it is shaped by the worst of that sitting in the lines rather than in the tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to Dronfield Sports Centre — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot we work, and so the location itself is rarely the trouble. A cramped parking space beats a vehicle driven somewhere more handy.
Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — by The Forge or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfuelled diesel Volvo XC60 telling you what is wrong.
Hill Top: stranded wherever you stopped
The opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable does not come to everyone. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Barlow Lees Lane because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.
Whether you stay with the vehicle or keep clear of it depends on if being nearby looks safe. Don't restart it to get to a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the system. We will send our van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that's far better than carrying on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
The local M1 is the one which matters now, and lies under 10 miles from Hill Top. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.
Do not start it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible exit and turn off. It alters what our engineers bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.
A bit about Hill Top

What our engineers do when our engineers reach you around Hill Top
- Our engineers check what went in, how much, and if your motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
- Away goes the contaminated mixture.
- Our technicians clean your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what's left in your system isn't what caused the trouble.
- The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- Once it is fired up, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
After that it is ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.
Hill Top AdBlue removal is a different job
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — do not crank it — but this issue is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.
Both are ours. There's a separate Hill Top page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Hill Top prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Honestly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what moves it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.
The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Hill Top
At a petrol station around Hill Top, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes, and it's where a large part of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers visit JET and the other forecourts nearby regularly.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been drawn through the system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?
Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the car off. It's fixable a lot more commonly than people fear, even though driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. Your pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Is the car still with you?
The motor remains off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
