Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hill Top? Don't Start It
With your tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet turned over, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Hill Top and the remainder of South Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Contact us so we can show you what comes after that before you do anything else.
What to try first about petrol in a diesel
- Never start the vehicle. Turned on anyway? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run, so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for several miles. Drivers get that backwards. It is not all right — that fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
- Turning your ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition be.
- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we would much rather get to a tricky place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Whitley View Road, put those hazards on and keep it there.
- Before you ring, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting S61 2 — that is what settles whether the van shows up or circles.
- Three replies settle your whole job: the fuel you tipped in, the rough measure of it, plus whether anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Ring us before you drive it. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the car at Meadowhall ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, and any damage came on the run in, when the pump was taking diesel that petrol had weakened.
Each start primes the fuel system and pulls more of the mixture out of that tank and towards the pump — which is why a motor moved twice into a better spot has quietly grown into a bigger job than one left precisely where it stopped. So if our engineers cannot work beside your diesel BMW 5 Series, we shift the vehicle without firing it. None of that is fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside The Co-operative Food we visit often, and the fuel is seldom the difficult part: that bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height barrier at the entrance deciding if a van can reach you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the vehicle points.
A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a frantic morning run asks for plenty — so three miles in the Audi A6 seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside Blackburn Primary School, already late, a receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, ring us.
Three replies decide much of the work: what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we get to the car in the car park at The Hill Top Hotel. Next the tainted blend comes out of the tank, the lines are rinsed, and where your Kia Sportage has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the system bled, we fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before you pull away.
Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mix rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Nearly nobody knows how full the tank was in a motor collected two days ago, and our engineers work that out there. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then call us about the Citroen C4 Picasso near Two Dinners Ignatiu.
At the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel
Much of the job begins at the pump, so a big part of that ends up done on site. If you're still at the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that's typically where this drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.
Before the engine has fired — a garage is the only location it ends up spotted. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where the vehicle stands.
Clear of the pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Very much worth it. Cranking it just for four car lengths? Never.
Service around Hill Top
Meadow Hall, Blackburn, Richmond Park, Low Wincobank, Jordan — each of them on the rounds that bring us across to Hill Top too, a residential suburb.
Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and nearly all towns across South Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Phone to ask rather than presuming, particularly when you are on the boundary or somewhere your phone can't find.
The map marks the patch the page covers. Your car never needs to come to us. We work across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Stranded on the roadside near Hill Top
Not everybody has a safe place to pull over. Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge of Park View Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.
Clear of the car when it's not safe to wait in it, by it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. Our van driving to a tricky location is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the car than carrying on.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles
This is where the local M1 counts, under a mile away from Hill Top. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.
Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. It changes what we bring, and so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.

What comes next when our engineers get to you in Hill Top
- Our technicians find out what was put in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
- The tank is cleared of everything.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
- The engine is fired up and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
At that point it is ready to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.
A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hill Top
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the issue beneath it is a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.
Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal around Hill Top has its own page with the detail — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.
Hill Top pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What shifts the price is set out below, because this job is not one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.
- This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank holds.
- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?
Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.
Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Hill Top
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Hill Top?
Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers visit JET and the other forecourts nearby regularly.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It is recoverable a lot more regularly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Your pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
No. We drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
You, and the car, still together?
Don't turn it back on.
Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than drivers assume.
