Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hill Top? Don't Start It

With the tank still carrying the petrol and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that went in. Throughout Hill Top and the rest of Warwickshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. One call to us will be plenty: our technicians can explain what comes from here. Make it first.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start the vehicle. And having started, never depend on it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it burns it lubricates — your high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: flicking it on is usually enough to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into just those parts.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We'd sooner travel to an odd spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a vehicle that has never moved. On the verge on Donnithorne Avenue, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • Before you phone, have your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts CV10 7 — that is what decides whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Three details decide your whole job: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate amount of it, plus if it has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning drive running on a fluid that had shed a lot of the protection it is designed around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Passat, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing at Bermuda Park until it dawns on you at about eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that changed a good deal, which is why the question our engineers ask you is about distance instead of hours. Phone us. Keep the vehicle right where it sits.

Your Ford Kuga remains where it is in the car park by The Arches for the whole job, which typically goes like this. First our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, given that most of the work turns on those replies. That tank is emptied of the contaminated mix, the fuel lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it's a serviceable one. With fresh diesel in and the fuel system primed, your car is started and checked, and once it's running properly you pull away.

Out there fine, back flat. If that was the drive to Riversley Park Pitch & Putt, look at your tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the tight gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel Kia Sportage covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.

Three things help when you ring from near All Saints Church: which side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and whether the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot we work, and so the spot itself is hardly ever the trouble — we would much rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain your Volvo XC60, change the fuel filter where there's a serviceable one, flush the lines and put clean fuel through the whole system, because by this point the worst of it is sitting in the fuel lines rather than in your tank.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some contracts demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel Peugeot 2008 near Bermuda Pheonix Centre. You'll not know how full your tank was. Barely anyone does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on site regardless. Our engineers ask since the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at the forecourt?

The job begins at a pump, usually. Regularly the work ends there too. Our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at the nearest petrol station that is normally where this drain takes place.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the single place it is stopped. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

The staff will normally happily push the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. That is worth doing. Shifting it four bays does not warrant cranking it.

Can we cover your side of Hill Top?

Being a residential suburb, Hill Top has a steady call, whilst the villages close by come with it on the same journey: Chilvers Coton and Bermuda, Attleborough and Heath End, Griff.

Our technicians do come. Those names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of towns across Warwickshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Contact us to ask rather than presuming — borders especially, and anywhere your phone tends to misread.

The area this page includes sits on this map. The lot is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

Stranded at the kerbside somewhere in Hill Top?

Some people have no safe place to pull over at all. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge on Knebley Crescent, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Remain with your car if it's safe to sit there, and out of it if it isn't. Don't start up the engine to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the system. However awkward the location, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where your M6 comes in — under 5 miles from Hill Top. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

Never start it to reposition. Get off at the first safe junction then switch off. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

The visit around Hill Top, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The tank gets drained of everything.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that created the issue.
  • Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • Our engineers turn it on and confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Hill Top?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the fault beneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Hill Top page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hill Top pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What moves the price is listed below, since the job isn't one job and we can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank can hold.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for our van.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Hill Top

Fuel drains on a Hill Top petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers work at Texaco and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the system.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more often than drivers assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Standing next to it?

Shut off is the way it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. This is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
