Hill Top: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Never turn on the motor. If the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, across Hill Top and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Ring us so we can tell you what follows after that before you attempt any more.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do next
- Whenever you drive, the pump and the injectors wear. That's why you don't start it, and why you never believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Leave the ignition be as well. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.
- Never dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort, and we'd sooner get to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Wyndy Ridge, put your hazards on and leave the car there.
- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode that starts BD13 3, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
- What got in, about how much, plus whether the engine has fired — the three replies shape the full call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Do not take it home. The journey in has already put a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Skoda Octavia, and the journey back would about double it for no gain at all. Call us from the platform if that is easier. Our engineers never need you standing over the car outside Bingley while our engineers get on, and we'd far rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.
Diesel Ford Focus. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, outside The Co-operative Food. That's the enquiry we hope for, as the point underneath it's about quantity through the pump not hours on the clock.
Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Peugeot 3008 drove, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how that drive to Hill Top Recreation Ground went, then, and your tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.
Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than slapdash — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Vauxhall Astra, a fill-up close to Thornton War Memorial that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at your injectors.
By this point the tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in your filter, your lines, the pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Audi A6 that made it close to St James Church needs your circuit purged, not cleared.
Draining petrol from a diesel on the forecourt
Forecourts are where the job often starts, and where a large share of that ends. If you are still at the forecourt at Esso, that's generally where the drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent.
Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the single spot this is spotted. Our technicians can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.
Staff will usually help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the assistance. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.
Areas we reach around Hill Top
These same trips carry us to Thornton, Well Heads, Green Clough, Dean Lane Head and Erlings besides Hill Top, which is a residential suburb.
Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and nearly all locations around West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Close to the border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Phone to check instead of guessing.
The ground the page includes appears on this map. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory we serve, and none of it requires your vehicle to move to us.
Stranded on the kerbside anywhere around Hill Top?
Not everybody gets a decent place to pull over. A routine call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge on Hill Top Road or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.
Wait beside the motor while it's safe to wait in it, yet clear of it if it isn't. Do not start up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into your fuel system. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to an inconvenient location, and that is no trouble for us.
Petrol in a diesel, and the car has rolled
Here is where the local M606 matters, under 5 miles out of Hill Top. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Do not start it to reposition. Get off at the next safe exit then switch off. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring alters.
A bit about Hill Top
Hill Top is a suburban area situated on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with a mix of terraced housing and a population of around 2678 residents. Hill Top sits at an elevation of 242 metres, close to the nearby places of Thornton, Well Heads, and Green Clough. Hill Top is located near Bradford, which is approximately 4.3 miles away, and is part of the larger urban area surrounding the city. Hill Top's setting provides a balance between rural and urban environments, with the city of Bradford nearby and the countryside of West Yorkshire within reach.
Once our engineers reach you around Hill Top: what happens
- The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
- Away flows the contaminated mixture.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
- Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- The engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.
From that point, you are ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.
A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hill Top
Don't fire it up: that opening rule stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There is a separate Hill Top page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Hill Top pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What shifts the price is listed below, since this job isn't one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.
A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Hill Top motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Hill Top petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our technicians work at Shell and the other forecourts locally routinely.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more frequently than drivers expect.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it does not put back what petrol has thinned. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to take it to a dealership, as we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.
You, and the car, still together?
Turned off is the way the car remains.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it stay that way. A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists assume.
Throughout West Yorkshire and around Hill Top: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
