Hill Top: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Hill Top and the rest of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Ring us so we can show you what follows after that before you try anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • As you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. That's why you don't fire it up, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off also — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we would sooner travel to an awkward location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Hainworth Lane, turn your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Keep your position prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning BD21 5 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and the van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what went in, about how many litres, plus if your car has been turned over. Your replies shape whatever comes after.

Can petrol be drained from your diesel at a forecourt?

It begins at a pump, typically. Frequently it finishes at one too. Still at Shell? Then that's generally where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.

The forecourt is the single spot it gets caught before the motor has fired. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines along with that tank. That's still not a calamity, and we deal with it where the car sits. What settles it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Staff will generally pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the help. Moving the car four lengths does not warrant cranking it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Hill Top

Every start primes the fuel system and pulls more of the mixture out of the tank and towards the pump — which is why a vehicle shunted twice into a roomier spot has silently become a harder job than one left exactly where it stopped. So where our technicians cannot work alongside your diesel Renault Megane, our engineers roll the car without starting it. None of that is pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Co-op Food our technicians visit all the time, and your fuel is rarely the difficult part: that bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit at the entrance deciding whether a van gets to you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the car faces.

What we'll want to know is whether the trip there was brief and cold, since that is where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and whatever won't burn can slip past the rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Audi A3 sitting in the parking area outside The Worth Valley holding a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing deteriorates while it sits, and so leave it there overnight and call us next morning.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Whatever the diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Ingrow Cricket Club, it's doing none of it now: your pump isn't turning. So take your time — but do not drive it home to buy yourself any.

Seldom the problem, the location. On-street is the commonest spot our technicians work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from close to Ingrow Loco Museum, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can stand next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Volvo XC60 gets cleared, your filter changed where a usable one exists, the lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the full system — as by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not that tank.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle lumpy, and your diesel Seat Leon is parked up near Sue Belcher Community Centre. The motor is not packing up — that deadness is fuel that won't build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, so cars like yours typically get driven again before somebody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and phone us.

Areas we serve in Hill Top

Hainworth, Hermit Hole, Whins Wood, Hainworth Shaw, Cradle Edge — every one of them on our journeys that bring us out to Hill Top too, a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. Those places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations across West Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Presuming is the thing to skip, especially on the border or anywhere a satnav fails. Phone to enquire.

This map shows the patch the page includes. We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and the vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Kerbside breakdowns across Hill Top

The opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible does not fall to everybody. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Goff Well Lane since you worked it out after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Safe there? Wait with it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it. Never fire up the engine to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the system. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult spot, and that is no problem for us.

Driven it already? Pull in, then see this

Here is where the M606 comes in — under 10 miles away from Hill Top. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't restart it to move it. Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in our van.

What follows when we reach you in Hill Top

  • Three things get established before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • That tank is drained of it.
  • Our engineers rinse the fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what started the issue.
  • Our engineers put fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hill Top is a different matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the issue under it's a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Hill Top page. Both are ours to deal with.

Hill Top pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What shifts the figure is laid out below, as the job isn't one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank can hold.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Hill Top

At a petrol station around Hill Top, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our engineers work at Morrisons and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It is salvageable a lot more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with your vehicle?

Leave it shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the car remain that way. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
