Petrol in Diesel

Hill Top: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Hill Top and the remainder of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in. One call our way will be enough: our engineers can show you what follows from here. Try that first.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Do not fire it up — and don't believe it if it does start. This is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just will not run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It is wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Never thin it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • We'd rather get to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to sort than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Grove Street, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • A van showing up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode starting HD7 5, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what went in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has been started. Your answers shape whatever comes after.

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this work usually begins, and where a good share of it finishes. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is usually where it happens. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the station.

Nowhere else except the forecourt can the mistake be halted with your motor still unrun. The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where your car sits.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Well worth it. Cranking it over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Hill Top

Car parks like the one at Co-op Food are a place our engineers visit regularly, and the fuel is hardly ever the complicated part. That bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height bar on the way in that settles if a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. Where our engineers cannot work next to the diesel Ford Focus we will move the vehicle without starting it — and that is not pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Any start primes your fuel system and pulls more of the mix out of your tank and on to the pump, and so a motor shunted twice into a better space has quietly grown into a harder job than one left just where it stopped.

You will be advised to shift it clear of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. On the zig-zags outside Slaithwaite Church of England Voluntary Controlled Junior and Infant School, a misfuelled Mercedes E-Class running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes your lines, every prime draws more petrol through the fuel filter towards the pump. Let them grumble. Phone.

Leave the Volkswagen Polo close to Slaithwaite Community Centre then call us. We're direct about not driving on because a wearing pump loses, and what it gives off passes onward with your fuel to the injectors further along.

Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That is a misfilled diesel Audi Q3 telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near Slaithwaite Parish Church or anywhere else, and never start the vehicle to find a better spot.

Drain it then put clean diesel in — that's the suggestion you will get, generally from someone sure of themselves, and it's only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Renault Captur close to Slaithwaite Methodist Church and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound plausible. What takes place next is the problem: the engine straight away pulls the petrol still sitting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush the system and take the fuel filter off where the car has a serviceable one, which is the difference between your car being put right and the car only starting.

Service in Hill Top

As a residential suburb, Hill Top gets a frequent call, whilst the places round about go with it on that same run: Slaithwaite and Blakestones, Rotcher and Lower Holme, Upper Holme.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most locations across West Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Near the border, or anywhere your phone misreads? Phone and enquire instead of presuming.

Look at our map for the patch included here. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory we work on, and none of it requires the vehicle to move to us.

Broken down by the kerbside around Hill Top

Not everyone gets a chance to pull in anywhere sensible. A routine call for us instead of a rare one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge beside Netherend Road or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Fine there? Remain with it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it. Never start up your engine to nurse it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into your fuel system. A van coming to an inconvenient spot is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

This is where your M62 comes in, under 3 miles away from Hill Top. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never start it to move it. Get off at the next safe exit and switch off. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

Hill Top remains a residential community with a population of around 3990 people.

When we get to you around Hill Top: what happens

  • Our technicians check what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • We empty the tank of the tainted fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • We put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Hill Top AdBlue removal is a different matter

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — never start the car — yet this issue is not. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Hill Top page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Hill Top

What moves the price is set out below, because this job is not one job and we cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Whether our van can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Hill Top

Fuel drains on a Hill Top petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's permission our technicians visit JET and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. What determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Leave the car shut off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
