Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hillhouse? Don't Start It
If you have not started the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car requires while the petrol is still in that tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Hillhouse or the remainder of South Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Phone so our team can show you what happens from here before you attempt any more.
What to do now about petrol in a diesel
- Don't start the vehicle. Turned on all the same? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for several miles. Drivers get that confused. It isn't fine — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition is left off also — switch it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.
- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so never tip diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on St Ninian's Road? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. An odd place works for us better than a started diesel.
- Before you dial, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting ML3 9 — that is what determines whether the van shows up or circles.
- Three replies decide the whole visit: the stuff you put in, the rough measure of it, plus whether anything has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.
Do not drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that injection pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the drive back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over your Volkswagen Tiguan outside Hamilton West while the work happens, and our team would far rather hear from you tonight than learn on Monday.
Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone us. Three miles in your Nissan Qashqai sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel to demand — and a hurried morning dash asks for plenty.
Three answers decide most of the work: what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at the car in the car park by Red Burn Farm - Farmhouse inns. Next the polluted mix comes out of your tank, the lines are rinsed, and where your Ford Focus has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once new diesel is in and the system primed, our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly before you set off.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving the engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through — that is the entire process. It explains the ordinary Udston Woods call too: a diesel Mercedes E-Class that went out without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.
Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: we flush it, and take the filter off where there is a serviceable one. Compare that with the certain tip you will get — drain the car, refill with fresh diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Kia Sportage close to Hillhouse & Earnock Community Centre and it'll start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then the engine pulls the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.
Can petrol be taken from a diesel on a forecourt?
A large chunk of the job gets done at a forecourt, as that is where it usually kicks off. We work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, and so if you are still at BP that is typically where this drain takes place.
At the forecourt, this gets caught with your engine never fired, and no place else manages it. We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.
The attendants will generally help you move the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.
Hillhouse and the places next to it
Those same trips take us to Udston, Earnock, Auchinraith, Burnbank and Chantinghall along with Hillhouse, which is a residential suburb.
If yours is not on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for most locations in South Lanarkshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours. Contact us and ask instead of guessing — borders above all, and anywhere the satnav tends to misread.
Use this map for the ground covered on this page. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and the car doesn't need to come to us.
Stuck on the kerbside anywhere in Hillhouse?
Not everyone gets a decent place to pull in. Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge of Farm Terrace, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.
Clear of your car while it isn't wise to wait there, beside it if it is. Never start up the motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that blend further into the system. A technician heading to an inconvenient location is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for your car than driving on.
Driven it already? Stop, and check this
Here is where your M74 comes into it — under 3 miles from Hillhouse. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.
Never start it to move it. Come off at the first safe junction then switch off. Suppose the worst of it on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.
All about Hillhouse

Hillhouse has a population of around 7006 residents and is part of the larger Glasgow urban area.
Once we reach you in Hillhouse: what happens
- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
- That tank gets emptied completely.
- What is left in the fuel system should not be what caused the issue, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
- Your engine is started and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.
That has it ready to set off. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Hillhouse is a different matter
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the issue underneath it's a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.
Both are ours. There's a separate Hillhouse page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Hillhouse
We cannot put one price on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What changes it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.
Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range. If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Hillhouse drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
I am on a forecourt in Hillhouse. Can you drain the car here?
A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. Our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more frequently than motorists assume.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.
Still with the car?
Leave the car turned off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
