Petrol in Diesel

Hilton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on the engine. While the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, across Hilton and the remainder of Cambridgeshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Ring us before anything else happens, and you'll hear what follows from there.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Don't crank it. Turned on all the same? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off happily, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that confused. It's not okay — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Flicking the ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so do not add diesel on top to thin it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A motor that has never shifted is the quickest one to handle, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on High Street? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. An odd place suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode starting PE28 9, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.
  • What went in, about how much, and also if the motor has run — the three details settle the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Phone before you move it. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the car at Huntingdon ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, and any damage came on the drive in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had diluted.

A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a rushed morning drive demands plenty — so three miles in your Skoda Octavia feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of Pendragon Community Primary School, running late, the receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, ring us.

Our technicians clean the fuel lines rather than only emptying your tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already reached the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Audi A3 parked up by Hilton Methodist Church a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us and leave it off.

Switch off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — near Hilton Village Hall or anywhere at all. Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Mercedes A-Class telling you what is wrong.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the fuel filter, the lines, your pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Hyundai Tucson that got close to Hilton Turf Maze and Sparrows Monument needs your circuit flushed, not cleared.

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at a forecourt?

It begins at a forecourt, usually. Regularly it ends there as well. Our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission, and so if you're still at Shell that is normally where this drain gets done.

Nowhere except the forecourt can it be caught with the engine still unstarted. The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key decide how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car stands.

Staff will usually help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the offer. Moving the car four bays does not warrant firing it.

Do our technicians serve your part of Hilton?

These same trips take us to Papworth St Agnes, Fenstanton, Conington, Papworth Everard and Elsworth along with Hilton, which is a village.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of places around Cambridgeshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours. Contact us to enquire rather than presuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere your satnav can get wrong.

That map shows the ground the page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is ground our engineers work on, and none of it requires the car to move to us.

Hilton: stranded wherever you pulled up

The chance to stop anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everyone. If you realised after setting off and ended up on the verge of Graveley Way, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Clear of the car if it isn't sensible to wait in it, beside it when it is. Do not start up the motor to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into the system. A technician coming to an awkward place is no problem for us, and it's far better for the car than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull in, then see below

This is where the local M11 comes in, under 10 miles out of Hilton. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Do not start it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible junction then switch off. Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

A little about Hilton

Hilton is a village in Cambridgeshire, situated on the riverside at a low elevation of around 14 metres. Hilton lies near the cities of Cambridge and Huntingdon, and is close to the villages of Papworth St Agnes, Fenstanton, and Conington. Hilton has a population of approximately 1052 people, living in predominantly detached housing.

Our job around Hilton, step by step

  • The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.
  • Out flows the polluted fuel.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the issue, so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • We fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Hilton AdBlue removal is a separate problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the fault under it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal in Hilton has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Hilton

What shifts the price is listed below, since this job isn't one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single price on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for our van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Hilton motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Hilton petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers attend Phoenix (Empson Motors) and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. What determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the vehicle off. It is recoverable much more often than motorists fear, even though driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Shut off is the way it stays.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. Cold and parked, a car is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Cambridgeshire and around Hilton: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
