Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hilton: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even for a moment, to move the vehicle. Stop; leave it off. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is usually a simple drain and a flush, done right where the vehicle sits, and what you do in the coming few minutes settles that far more than anything else. Below is the order from this point, anywhere in Hilton you happen to be.

Call 0333 366 0103

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

In this order, all before anything else:

  • Keys out of the ignition. Turning the ignition on can be enough to prime your fuel system, and priming draws petrol out of the tank toward the components it harms. Keep the vehicle off completely.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mix.
  • Hazard lights on. If you are at all close to moving traffic, make the vehicle simple to see before you do anything else.
  • However short the distance, starting it to shift it is the thing to avoid. On a forecourt, push the vehicle away from the petrol pump by hand instead, then ask the attendants to help.
  • Hold on to the receipt: the grade and roughly how much are written on it, and they are what our engineers ask about first.

If you were still driving when you noticed, stop somewhere safe rather than pushing on for the services — on the M42, under 15 miles from Hilton, that means the next exit. Step one follows.

Hilton fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

Engine not run at all?

  • That petrol is still in that tank and nowhere else.
  • Normally it is drained and rinsed right where the car is.
  • This, here, is the best place to be in, and the whole reason step one counts.

Run at all, however briefly:

  • From the tank, past the filter, into the fuel lines: that is how far that petrol has travelled.
  • Run it farther and the petrol gets to your injectors, having gone through your fuel pump first.
  • The further it went, the bigger the job — the fuel lines, your filter, and now and then more besides.

Diesel keeps your high-pressure pump and your injectors oiled as it goes through them. Petrol offers them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there. Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing. Petrol being pumped is grinding down the parts that shift the car.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Hilton, step by step

Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Hilton: what our engineers need

Whether the van circles or finds you depends on a little preparation.

  • The ideal place to start is a postcode — one starting DE65 5 — for where you are.
  • Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that's Main Street or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Car parks are found most easily by what they serve: tell us the one outside Aldi, and it's simple.
  • Say what your car is — make, model — and confirm it's diesel.
  • What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Hilton, so tell us which.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — either gives us how much.
  • The distance it covered, and how heavily, if it ran at all.
  • The owner may have to approve this work under some hire and company contracts — so it's quicker to settle whose vehicle it is before our engineers get there.

Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — does the trick as well.

Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around Hilton

During the wait, the damage comes from kindly meant help — so these matter.

  • Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, stay with it.
  • No one starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a couple of yards.
  • Anything from the boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.
  • Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond that tank stays where it is regardless.
  • Keep the ignition off — your windows and your radio too.

Step by step: the fuel drain when our van arrives

  • Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: the answers decide this job, and that is why you get a price after them rather than before.
  • Draining it is how the blend gets taken out of the tank.
  • Cleaning your lines follows, because a motor that ran has petrol past that tank, in the fuel lines themselves.
  • Cleaned, or swapped if the car has a usable one: your filter is sorted next.
  • Bleeding the system follows once clean diesel is in.
  • Our technicians fire it up only after clean diesel has gone in and bled the system, then confirm that it's running properly.

Until it runs on clean diesel, we stay with it. The car goes back to normal driving at once, and permanent damage is very unusual if it has been noticed quickly.

Once the fuel drain is done: driving around Hilton once more

  • Started on new diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Simply drive normally.
  • Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • Keep your documents. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
  • Read the label on the pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
