Hilton: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Stop, then leave your motor off — not on, and not for a second to shift it. The coming few minutes settle it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run generally comes down to emptying then purging, on the spot. Wherever you happen to be around Hilton, this is how things run from now.
Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off
Work through these in order, first.
- Bleeding your fuel system pulls petrol from the tank toward the parts it harms, and switching the ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys get taken out, and your ignition remains off altogether.
- A fuller tank of the same mixture is all topping up gives you, because it removes nothing. So no more diesel.
- Get your car easy to see first — hazards on — if there is moving traffic anywhere close to you.
- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push the car clear of the petrol pump. Do not fire it up to shift it, however short the distance.
- Which fuel, and roughly how much? The receipt replies that, and that is where our first question starts. Do not throw it away.
Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you are on the M90, over 50 miles from Hilton, and pull over somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Stage one comes after that.
Each Hilton fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?
Everything after this point rests on one answer.
If it has never been started:
- Just that tank has petrol in it so far.
- Where your car stands is normally where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.
- This is the best case — which is the entire point of step one.
Motor run, however for a moment?
- Some petrol has left the tank by now, gone through your filter, and reached the lines.
- On a bigger run it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.
- The job expands with the miles — lines cleaned, filter sorted, occasionally more.
The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't. Nothing is harmed by petrol that is just sitting in a tank. Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that shift the vehicle.
Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Hilton: what our technicians need
A little planning is the difference between a van that finds you and a van that circles.
- IV2 4 plus the remainder of the postcode makes the ideal way to start telling us where you are.
- The road or the car park. A road name helps — Cauldeen Road, or wherever you have stopped.
- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Asda, for instance — and it's far easier to find.
- Make and model of the vehicle, and the fact it's a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Hilton page.
- The amount: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you held the nozzle in.
- If it's run, how far and how heavily — and if it's run at all.
- Hire or company car? Some contracts want the owner's go-ahead for this work, and sorting it before our engineers get there is quicker than after.
Call 0333 366 0103 next. Email works too if it can wait, with the vehicle left at home, going nowhere.
Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in Hilton
Help, however well meant, is what does the damage whilst you wait. So hold to these.
- Where the vehicle has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the car.
- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.
- Anything from the boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes the petrol.
- Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is dangerous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Do not try a home-made drain.
- Not for the radio, not for the windows: your ignition remains off.
The fuel drain, step by step, after our van gets there
- Three questions. What went in, how much, and whether it has run. Those answers decide the job, which is why our quote comes after them and not before.
- Then that tank is drained, and the polluted fuel comes out.
- The lines are purged. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond your tank, and the lines are holding it.
- Cleared, or swapped if the vehicle has a usable one: your filter is sorted next.
- Your system is primed with clean diesel.
- The first start on fresh diesel. Once bleeding is complete, the motor is fired up and we check that it runs properly.
Your car has clean diesel running through it before our engineers leave. Long-term damage is very rare if it has been spotted early, so your car can go right back to normal use.
After your fuel drain: back on the road in Hilton
- After it's been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing unusual to do: drive normally.
- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle hesitating: pull over then call us back.
- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was carried out, so keep the documents.
- Next time, go by the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
