Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hockley? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Hockley and the remainder of Essex. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the engine has not yet run and the fuel is still in that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Ring us and then we will tell you what happens next before you attempt much else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you never fire it up, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point motorists get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, which carries the petrol out of the tank and into precisely those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Southend Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. An awkward place works for us better than a started motor.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting SS5 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
  • Three details settle your whole job: the liquid you poured in, the ballpark volume of it, and whether it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Don't drive it home. The journey in has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the drive back would close to double it for no reason at all. Call us from the platform if that's easier. Our technicians never need you hovering over the car at the nearest station whilst our technicians get on, and our team would very much rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.

How much fuel your pump has pulled is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the call our technicians like goes like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now turned off at The Co-operative Food.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both prepared. Your Dacia Duster will have seemed completely ordinary on the way back from Lift Westerings — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol motor usually won't run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, since behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

Leave the BMW 5 Series by Hockley Library then call us. We're blunt about not driving on as a worn-out pump gives off, and what it sheds moves on with the fuel to the injectors beyond it.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly, not your engine failing — and with no warning for it, cars in that position normally get driven a second time before anyone rings. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Ford Fiesta now sitting close to Hockley Evangelical Church. Switch the vehicle off and phone us.

On a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Forecourts are where the job usually begins, and where a fair share of that ends. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission, so if you're still at Esso that's typically where this drain takes place.

Nowhere other than a forecourt can this be caught with the engine still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the staff help you roll it. Well worth doing. Moving it four bays doesn't justify firing the motor.

Will we serve your corner of Hockley?

Hockley is a rural village, and our team are out to it and to the places around it on the same trips: Hawkwell, Mount Bovers, Ashingdon, Stroud Green and Hullbridge.

There are separate pages for nearly all locations around Essex, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Assuming is the mistake to resist, above all on a boundary or anywhere your satnav struggles. Phone to enquire.

The map shows the area this page includes. The car never needs to move to us. Our technicians work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Hockley: stuck wherever you parked

Not everybody has a chance to stop somewhere sensible. Set off, then realised? Ended up along the verge beside Main Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Stay beside your car if it is safe to be there, and out of the vehicle when it isn't. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. A technician coming to a tricky spot is no trouble for us, and it's much better for the car than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the local M25 matters, under 25 miles out of Hockley. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never start the vehicle to reposition. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.

All about Hockley

Hockley has a population of around 2945 people, predominantly living in detached housing.

Our call-out around Hockley, step by step

  • The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
  • The tainted fuel is pulled out of that tank.
  • Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • We pour new diesel in and prime the system.
  • Once it's turned on, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hockley

Do not crank it: that first instruction holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Hockley page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Hockley?

One price would not be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel: common questions around Hockley

Fuel drains on a Hockley petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a good share of this work takes place. Regularly, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more often than drivers expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Switched off is the way it stays.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
