Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hogganfield?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Hogganfield and the rest of Glasgow City. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When your engine has not been started and the petrol is still in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Ring us before everything else happens, and you will know what follows after that.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Don't crank it — and never believe it if it runs. That is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just can't run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It's grinding your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice assumes — so do not add diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd sooner get to a tricky place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Lochview Drive, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Before you phone, have your location. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts G33 1 — that is what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how much, and also whether the car has started. Those three facts determine the entire call-out.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the job usually begins, and where a big part of it ends. The drain typically takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's agreement, that is a spot our engineers work, and routinely.

Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the one setting it ends up stopped. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the assistance. Firing the car just to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Hogganfield

We are in car parks like the one outside Lidl all the time, and it's hardly ever the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height barrier at the way in, which settles if our van gets to you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you call, and which way your car is pointing. If there's no room to work next to the Volkswagen Tiguan, we shift it without the motor. That isn't fussiness over a few seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of the tank on to your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a better bay is quietly a worse job than one nobody touched.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a hurried morning dash demands plenty — so three miles in your BMW 3 Series seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, call us.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how the drive to St Aloysius' College Sports Grounds went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther your Nissan Qashqai travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then call us.

The narrower petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. Strange locations see most of that for that reason. So: topped up by Golf It! without thinking, in a diesel Audi A3 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody realises, and distance settles how much petrol reaches your injectors.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in the filter, the lines, your pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that got by Golf It! Padel needs your system purged, not drained.

Service in Hogganfield

Hogganfield is a residential suburb, and so we get out to it and to the areas around it on the usual rounds: Millerston, Blackhill, Ruchazie, Craigend and Riddrie.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations around Glasgow City have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Contact us and ask rather than guessing — boundaries particularly, and wherever a satnav can get wrong.

That map marks the ground the page covers. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the car does not need to travel to us.

Stuck on the roadside in Hogganfield

Not everyone finds a suitable spot to pull in. A routine call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up along the verge beside Royston Road or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Sit with the motor when it is wise to be inside, but out of the vehicle when it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However inconvenient the location, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

The local M80 is the one that counts here, and lies under a mile from Hogganfield. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Don't start it to move it. Get off at the first sensible junction then switch off. It affects what we bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer run — anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

What our technicians do when our engineers get to you in Hogganfield

  • Three things get established before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Away goes the polluted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Our engineers start the car and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Hogganfield AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

Don't fire it up: that first step holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Hogganfield page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Hogganfield

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • This is the big one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. If it is not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Hogganfield drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Hogganfield?

A big portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our engineers answer there and then.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. What decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the car off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more often than people fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Switched off is how it stays.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers assume, and a parked, cold motor is the best place to be in.
