Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Holland Slack?

If you have not started your engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still inside the tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has ended up in Holland Slack or the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Call us before all else starts, so you will hear what happens after that.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That's why you do not crank it, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off as well — flick it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd sooner drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Alderwood Road, put the hazards on and leave it there.
  • Before you phone, get your location. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting PR5 6 — that's what decides whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • What went in, about how much, and whether your car has started — those three answers determine the entire visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight, a rushed refuel on the way in, and the penny drops around eleven — by which time your diesel Renault Megane has been standing at Bamber Bridge for three hours. Phone us and keep the vehicle right where it is. The run in is the bit that matters most, as diesel performs two jobs on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates its injection pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with the pump working on a liquid that had given up a lot of the protection it is made for — which is why the question our engineers ask is how many miles you drove, not how long your motor has been stood.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Passat, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at Co-op Food now. Time passed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

What we'll ask about is if the trip there was brief and chilly, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and what doesn't burn can slip past the rings and into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Dacia Duster standing in the parking area by Beam & Brycg holding a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing worsens whilst it sits, so park the car there overnight then phone us in the morning.

Why so blunt about leaving the keys alone? Because your pump is ahead of the injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it sheds downstream with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Audi A3 close to St Aidan.

Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That's your misfuelled Ford Kuga, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly near Top of Orr's Mill Tower, then leave the restarting alone.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of this job begins at the pump, so a big part of that gets done at one. The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the owner's permission, that's somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.

Nowhere other than a garage can this be halted with your engine still cold. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Very much worth doing. Firing it to shift four car lengths isn't.

Coverage in Holland Slack

Holland Slack is a residential suburb, and so our team get out to it and to the areas near it on the same rounds: School Lane, Bamber Bridge, Walton-le-Dale, Higher Walton and Walton Summit.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and nearly all towns around Lancashire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Guessing is the habit to avoid, particularly on the boundary or anywhere the satnav goes wrong. Contact us to check.

This map shows the ground this page covers. We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

Kerbside stops across Holland Slack

A chance to pull in anywhere safe does not fall to everyone. Set off, then realised? Landed along the verge on Pearwood Close, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Wait beside your car while it is safe to sit there, and clear of it if it isn't. Do not fire it up to get to a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the fuel system. A van coming to an awkward location is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

Here is where the local M61 comes in, under a mile away from Holland Slack. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't start it to reposition. Come off at the next safe junction and switch off. It affects what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

Holland Slack itself

Holland Slack is a suburban area located on the riverside in Lancashire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a relatively low elevation of 41 metres. Holland Slack sits near the city of Preston, approximately 2.2 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as School Lane and Bamber Bridge. Holland Slack has a population of around 6770 residents, who enjoy the area's proximity to the river and surrounding countryside.

What we do when we arrive with you in Holland Slack

  • Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and if your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • That tank is emptied of it.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards is not the thing that started the issue.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • It is run with new diesel in it, and we confirm that it is running properly.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Our engineers do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Holland Slack is a distinct matter

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — don't fire it up — but the issue isn't. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Holland Slack page. Both are ours to handle.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Holland Slack

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Holland Slack

At a petrol station around Holland Slack, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a big share of this work takes place. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. It's salvageable much more regularly than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. Your pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Shut off is how the car stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people fear.
