Holway: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Holway and the remainder of Flintshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. When the engine has not been started and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Call us and our technicians can explain what happens from here before you do any more.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try first
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never fire it up. And having started, do not trust it: your fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
- Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates the injection pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of that tank and into just those components.
- Do not put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it just gives you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Moor Avenue? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An odd location suits us better than a started engine.
- Our van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts CH8 7, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you dial.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how much, plus if the motor has started. Those three replies shape your whole call-out.
Draining petrol from a diesel at the forecourt
Forecourts are where the work mostly begins, and where a large share of it ends. Still at Texaco? Then that is generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.
Nowhere else other than a forecourt can the mistake be halted with your motor still unrun. Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.
Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you push the vehicle. Worth it. Starting the car to roll four car lengths is not.
Easy, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at easy throttle draws little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia somewhere around Holway, a boot full of shopping, and you sat at Tesco — phone us. Leaving that space is never worth another start. That tank gets emptied where it sits, the fuel lines rinsed, clean diesel in, and you drive home.
A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a frantic morning drive asks for plenty — so three miles in your Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, a receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone.
Straightforward job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Nissan Qashqai left outside Talacre with petrol in your tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, and so leave the vehicle and phone once it's light. Expect a question about the run there, though. Short and cold is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what will not burn can slip past the piston rings then into the engine oil.
Rattling? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That's your misfuelled Audi A6, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly near St Winefride's Chapel, then leave the restarting alone.
Fixed and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: our technicians flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves suggestion you'll get — drain the vehicle, refill with clean diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Ford Kuga close to St Winefride’s Well Museum and it will start, which is precisely why the tip sounds sensible. Then the engine draws the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.
Coverage near Holway
Mwdwl-eithin, Pen-y-Ball Top, Smithy Gate, Carmel, Bryn Celyn — each of those on the runs that bring us across to Holway as well, a residential suburb.
Our engineers do come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places across Flintshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Close to the border, or anywhere the satnav can't find? Call us and ask instead of presuming.
The patch the page covers appears on our map. Every bit of it is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring the vehicle anywhere.
Stuck on the kerbside anywhere around Holway?
The opportunity to stop somewhere sensible does not come to everybody. A common call for us and not an odd one: realised after setting off, ended up along the verge of Moorfields or in a lay-by with the hazards on.
Whether you stay with the car or stand away from it rests on whether staying in it is safe. Do not start it up to get to a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into the system. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult location, and that is no bother for us.
Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has rolled
under 10 miles out of Holway, the local M53 is what matters now. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.
The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in our van.
Where's Holway?
Holway is a suburban area in Flintshire, situated on the north Welsh coast, with an elevation of around 145 metres. Holway lies near several notable locations, including Mwdwl-eithin and Pen-y-Ball Top, and is close to the city of St Asaph. Holway is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the residential nature of the area.
Our visit in Holway, step by step
- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
- Away goes the polluted mixture.
- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
- We start the car and confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.
From there, you're ready to pull away. Our engineers do all of it wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.
A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Holway
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas this fault underneath it is a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.
Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Holway page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Holway?
One number would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:
- This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Whether a van can safely reach your car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.
A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.
Holway motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
I'm on a forecourt around Holway. Can you drain the vehicle here?
A big part of this work takes place there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our engineers answer on the spot.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It's fixable far more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
It's not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to cope with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.
Is the car still with you?
Your engine remains off.
Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the car stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
