Petrol in Diesel

Honresfeld: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. Across Honresfeld and the rest of Greater Manchester, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. One call to us will be plenty: our team can show you what follows next. Try this straight away.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the car — and never rely on it if it does start. This is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel usually just will not run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for a few miles. It's not fine. It's wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Flicking your ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Never put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely gives you a fuller tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Rake Terrace, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • The van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode starting OL15 0, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you phone.
  • What went in, roughly how much, plus if your car has started — those three answers decide the entire call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Taking it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has sent real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return trip would more or less double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Passat can wait outside Littleborough perfectly happily. Ring from the platform if easier; standing over us whilst our engineers work is not necessary.

Somebody will urge you to shift the car out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags outside Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School is a nuisance; the same car restarted three more times to be polite is a fuel system instead of a tank. Each restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past your filter and into your pump. Leave it, let everyone grumble, then give us a call.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Mercedes E-Class did on the way to Whittaker Golf Club, none of that is going on now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

Unfamiliar places are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical rather than sloppy: the slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up near Hollingworth Visitor Centre without thinking, in a diesel Ford Kuga you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody notices, and mileage is what determines how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

By now your tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and the mix goes into the fuel filter, into your lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Renault Captur that made it by St Barnabas needs its circuit cleared. Emptying is not the same thing.

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on a forecourt?

Forecourts are where this job usually begins, and where a fair chunk of that finishes. Still at Texaco? Then that's usually where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the owner.

At a garage, it is caught with the motor never started, and nowhere else does that. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where your car stands.

The attendants will generally happily push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. It is worth doing. Moving the car four bays does not warrant firing the engine.

Areas we serve in Honresfeld

Being a small village, Honresfeld sees a frequent call, whilst its neighbours nearby go along on the same run: Durn and Ealees, Gale and Littleborough, Lydgate.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for most locations around Greater Manchester, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours. Assuming is the habit to resist, above all on a border or somewhere your satnav fails. Ring us to enquire.

Look at the map for the area covered here. Your car does not need to move to us. We work across all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Kerbside call-outs around Honresfeld

Not everybody has a chance to stop somewhere safe. A common call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, finished up on the verge on Schofield Street or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Safe right there? Remain beside it. Not fine? Get out and away from it. Never start it up to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the system. However tricky the spot, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull over, then read below

Here is where the local M62 comes in, under 3 miles from Honresfeld. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It affects what we bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

What happens when our technicians reach you in Honresfeld

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
  • That tank gets drained of everything.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what created the issue, so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted early, long-term damage is very rare.

Honresfeld AdBlue removal is a separate job

The problem is not the same, though the first rule is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits instead.

AdBlue removal around Honresfeld has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Honresfeld?

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Honresfeld

At a petrol station in Honresfeld, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this takes place. We visit Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep it off. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a modification, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

Don't switch it on again.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
