Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Horncastle?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Horncastle and the remainder of Lincolnshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Just one call to us will be sufficient: our technicians can show you what comes next. Do it straight away.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Don't fire it up — and don't trust it if it fires up. Here is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for a few miles. It's not okay. It is wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those components.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on St. Lawrence Street, anywhere — a tricky location for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a car that never shifted.
  • Our van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting LN9 5, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you ring.
  • Three details decide the full call-out: the liquid you put in, the approximate quantity involved, and if it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel at the forecourt?

Plenty of the job begins at a forecourt, meaning a large chunk of that is done at one. Still at Richard Dear/Total? Then that is typically where it takes place. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.

At a forecourt, it is stopped with your engine never run, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the car is.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you roll it. Very much worth it. Rolling it four lengths doesn't merit starting the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Horncastle

Car parks like the one outside Lincolnshire Co-op are a spot our technicians visit frequently, and your fuel is rarely the awkward part. That bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height barrier on the way in that decides whether a van can get to you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. If we can't work next to the diesel Renault Clio we'll move the car without running it — and that is not fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Each start primes the fuel system and sucks more of the mix out of the tank and towards your pump, and so a car shunted twice into a nicer spot has gradually become a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped.

Twenty to nine. By Horncastle Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Put your hazards on, leave your ignition alone, and call us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a dash taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of it.

What we will ask about is whether the run there was short and cold, as that's where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and what does not burn can slip past the rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting in the car park at The Punch House with a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens while it stands, so park the car overnight and phone us first thing.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle sits, since a diesel Mercedes C-Class left outside Hamerton Gardens is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, parked close to Stanhope Memorial. For a diesel Audi A3 whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Phone us, then let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the fuel lines get flushed and not just that tank drained.

Do our engineers reach your corner of Horncastle?

As a riverside town, Horncastle gets a frequent visit, whilst the places close by go along on that same run: Thimbleby and Low Toynton, Thornton and West Ashby, High Toynton.

There are pages for the majority of locations across Lincolnshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Close to a boundary, or anywhere a satnav struggles with? Phone and check instead of assuming.

The area this page covers is on this map. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory we serve, and none of it asks the car to travel to us.

Kerbside stops around Horncastle

Not everybody gets the chance to pull in anywhere sensible. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside High Street since you worked it out after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Stay with your car while it's safe to sit in it, but out of the car when it is not. Do not restart it to reach a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into your fuel system. We'll take our van to a difficult place without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is much better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the M180 comes in — under 50 miles away from Horncastle. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and don't restart the car to move it. It alters what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

A little about Horncastle

Horncastle is a town situated on the River Waring in Lincolnshire, with a population of around 7293 people. Horncastle sits at an elevation of 34 metres, near the villages of Thimbleby and Low Toynton, and is located 17.6 miles from Lincoln. Horncastle has a range of housing, with detached homes being the predominant type. Horncastle is also relatively close to London, at a distance of 117.5 miles.

Once our technicians arrive with you around Horncastle: what follows

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers change what the work really is.
  • Away flows the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • We turn it on and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and because everything is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

Horncastle AdBlue removal is a separate problem

Never crank it: that first instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Horncastle has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Horncastle costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Horncastle drivers

Fuel drains on a Horncastle petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the vehicle off. Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more regularly than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. The pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Don't turn the engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
