Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Horndean?
With your tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet started, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Horndean and the remainder of Hampshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. One ring our way will be plenty: our technicians will show you what happens after this. Try that right away.
What to do first about petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never crank it. And having started, do not depend on it: the fuel system is wearing while you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition is left off too — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.
- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so don't put diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and our team would much rather get to a tricky location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Dell Piece West, put your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
- Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts PO8 9, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how much, and also whether the motor has fired. Those three facts settle the entire job.
Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Renault Clio parked outside Rowlands Castle this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed diluted diesel through your pump was the journey in. Phone before you set off to collect it.
Diesel Volkswagen Tiguan. A couple of litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Turned off now, at Morrisons. That's the phone call we hope for, since the point beneath it's about quantity through the pump instead of hours on the clock.
Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left your diesel Mercedes E-Class up close to Horndean Remembers a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us then leave the vehicle off. The short drive truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has got to your filter and your pump — which is why we purge the lines instead of only clearing the tank.
Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than later. Then call us about the Audi A3, the diesel one, near Horndean Library. Do not worry that you cannot say how full your tank was — almost no one can two days into a car, and it is something our engineers check on site. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.
Flushed, not cleared — that's what a diesel Ford Kuga which got as far as Horndean War Memorial needs. Running a diesel puts that mix into your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with your tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the damage.
On a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel
A fair part of this job ends up done at a pump, because that is where it mostly begins. Still at Morrisons? Then that's normally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.
At a forecourt, this gets spotted with the motor never fired, and no place else manages it. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and your lines together with your tank. That's still not a disaster, and we put it right where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.
Attendants will generally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the help. Cranking the car to move four vehicle lengths is not.
Areas we serve around Horndean
Lovedean, Honeywood Mews, Cowplain, Blendworth, Wecock — all of them on our trips that carry us out to Horndean as well, a town.
We still come. The places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places around Hampshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Call us and check rather than assuming — borders especially, and anywhere a satnav can get wrong.
This map marks the patch this page spans. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers cover, and none of it needs your car to move to us.
Stranded on the kerbside in Horndean
Not everyone gets a decent place to stop. If you noticed after setting off and finished up along the verge of Catherington Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a common call for us rather than a rare one.
Okay there? Wait with it. Not fine? Get out and away from it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. Carrying on does your car far more harm than our van coming out to a difficult spot, and that's no bother for us.
Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has moved
This is where your A3(M) matters, under a mile out of Horndean. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.
The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It affects what we bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

What we do when our technicians get to you in Horndean
- We ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies change what the work actually is.
- The tank gets drained of it.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
- Our engineers put fresh diesel in and prime your system.
- After it is turned on, we make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.
At that point it is ready to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Horndean?
Don't fire it up: that first rule applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.
Both are ours. There is a separate Horndean page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Horndean costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what changes it:
- This is the big one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can safely get to the car and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.
Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.
Petrol in diesel questions from Horndean drivers
At a petrol station around Horndean, can you do a fuel drain there?
Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. We work at Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more often than motorists assume.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.
Still with your vehicle?
Keep the engine switched off.
Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
