Petrol in Diesel

Horner House: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not start your engine. If the fuel is still in the tank and the engine has not run, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, throughout Horner House and the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. One ring our way will be sufficient: our team will tell you what follows after this. Do it straight away.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And if started, don't believe it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Leave the ignition alone as well. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime that system, which moves the petrol out of the tank and into precisely those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so do not put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd rather travel to a tricky place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Park Drive Way, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts S36 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the motor has started. Those three details shape the whole job.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Driving it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has pushed real volume through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would close to double the figure to no gain. The Volkswagen Tiguan can stay outside Penistone perfectly well. Ring from the platform if quicker; standing over us while we work isn't needed.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at light throttle uses little of it. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia somewhere around Horner House, a boot full of shopping, and you stranded outside Co-op Food — ring us. Leaving that space isn't worth a restart. Your tank gets drained where it sits, your fuel lines cleaned, fresh diesel in, and you get home.

Shift it out of that gateway and sort it out later — that's what somebody will say, and it is wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags at Stocksbridge Nursery Infant School, a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for courtesy, it's no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, because priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through the fuel filter toward your pump. Let everyone grumble. Give us a call.

Three things help when you call from near The Venue: which side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual location our technicians work, so the place itself is rarely the problem — we would far rather deal with a narrow parking bay than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain the Citroen C3, change the filter where there's a serviceable one, flush the lines and put clean fuel through the whole circuit, as by this point the worst of that is sitting in the lines instead of in the tank.

The slimmer petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of careless. Unfamiliar spots see most of that for that reason. So: filled up by The Salvation Army - Stocksbridge without thinking, in a diesel Volvo XC60 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and distance decides how much petrol gets to your injectors.

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on a forecourt?

Pumps are where this job often starts, and where a fair part of it closes. If you're still on the forecourt at JET, that's typically where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

The forecourt is the one place the mistake is halted before your engine has started. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car sits.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Welcome the assistance. Shifting the car four bays does not warrant starting the engine.

Coverage near Horner House

Garden Village, Stocksbridge, Pot House, Shay House, East Whitwell — every one of them on our trips that bring us out to Horner House as well, a residential suburb.

There are pages for nearly all towns in South Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from this list says nothing about if we come. Guessing is the habit to resist, especially on the boundary or somewhere the satnav goes wrong. Contact us to check.

This map outlines the area this page covers. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is ground our engineers serve, and none of it requires your car to travel to us.

Broken down by the roadside around Horner House

Some people have no sensible place to pull in whatsoever. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Park Drive because you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you stay beside the car or keep away from it rests on whether being there feels wise. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. However tricky the place, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the car than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under 5 miles out of Horner House, the M1 is what matters here. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and do not restart the car to reposition. On a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what we bring.

When our technicians reach you in Horner House: what follows

  • Our technicians check what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • The tank gets drained of it.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • Our engineers put fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • Once it is fired up, we check it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Horner House is a separate matter

The fault isn't the same, though the first instruction is — do not fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and deposits.

AdBlue removal in Horner House has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

Horner House costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers can't put one price on this page frankly, as the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Horner House

I'm on a forecourt in Horner House. Can you drain it here?

A good part of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers attend Murco and the other forecourts around town routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep it shut off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the vehicle stay that way. This is recoverable from far more often than drivers expect, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
