Petrol in Diesel

Horsemoor: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Horsemoor and the remainder of Berkshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. When the engine has not run and the fuel is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. We will explain what the next step will be. Ring us — this happens before all else.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Started anyway? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car generally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for several miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: flicking it on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so don't add diesel on top to thin it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort, and our team would much rather travel to an awkward spot than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Green Lane, turn the hazards on then keep it there.
  • The van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts RG20 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, roughly how much, and if the engine has started. These three answers determine the full call-out.

Do not drive it home. The journey in has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Renault Clio, and the trip back would close to double it for no reason at all. Call us from the platform if that is simpler. Our technicians never need you standing over your car outside Newbury Racecourse while our engineers work, and we would far rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

We will come to you, clear the tank, purge the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can get home. So if petrol went into the diesel Volkswagen Tiguan in Horsemoor and you are stranded outside Spar with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us — and don't crank it again to leave that bay. A mile or so at light throttle pulls little diesel, which is why these tend to be the simple ones.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Newbury Show Ground in that diesel Audi A4 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on your engine to find more of it.

Clattering? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That's your misfilled Ford Fiesta, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe close to Newbury Show Ground, then leave the restarting alone.

Your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail: that's where that mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So your tank is not where most of the problem waits by this point, and a diesel Vauxhall Insignia that got near Bussock Camp needs the system cleared rather than drained.

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on a forecourt?

A large portion of the job is completed at a pump, as that is where it usually begins. Still at BP? Then that's generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

The forecourt is the one spot this gets spotted before the motor has started. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the key.

The staff will usually happily roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

Service around Horsemoor

Those same rounds get us to Chieveley, Downend, North Heath, Curridge and Winterbourne as well as Horsemoor, which is a residential suburb.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most places across Berkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Near a boundary, or anywhere your satnav can't find? Call us and ask instead of guessing.

The map is the ground the page includes. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Horsemoor: stuck where you parked

The chance to stop anywhere sensible does not come to everyone. Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge on School Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Safe there? Wait beside it. Not safe? Step out and clear of it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: restart it to get to somewhere safer and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. We will take the van to a tricky location without any bother, and for the car that's far better than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull in, then see this

The M4 is the road that counts here, and it sits under a mile from Horsemoor. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in the van.

Horsemoor itself

Horsemoor is a suburban area in Berkshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 128 metres. Horsemoor lies near the villages of Chieveley and Downend, and is close to the North Heath area. Horsemoor is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, and is located approximately 20 miles from Oxford. Horsemoor is also within commuting distance of London, being around 51 miles from the capital.

What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you around Horsemoor

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers change what the work actually is.
  • Out flows the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that started the problem.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running properly.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Horsemoor?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this fault underneath it's a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Horsemoor has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

Horsemoor costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One number would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to your car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it is not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Fuel drains on a Horsemoor petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the site's consent we attend Long Lane Garage and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving takes the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Leave it switched off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
