The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Hove Edge
Not for a moment, and not for moving it: your engine remains off. Pause there. Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is usually a drain and a flush, done where your vehicle sits, and what you do in the next few minutes decides that far more than anything else. From now on, step by step, wherever you are in Hove Edge:
Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel
Do these first, in this order.
- Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, your ignition can prime the system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank into the parts it damages.
- Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the issue. It does not: nothing comes out, and the tank simply holds more of the same.
- Make your car simple to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is traffic going past anywhere near you.
- By hand, not on your engine: that's how it comes off the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you push, whatever the mileage.
- Keep your receipt: the fuel and roughly how much are printed on it, and they are what we ask for first.
Still driving when you realised? Come off the M62 at the next junction if that is where you are, under 3 miles from Hove Edge, and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on to the services. Then start at step one.
The fork in each Hove Edge fuel drain: has it run yet?
Everything after this point depends on one answer.
If it has not once been started:
- Just your tank has petrol in it for now.
- Usually it's emptied and cleaned right where the car stands.
- Stage one matters for exactly this reason: it's the best place to be in.
Motor run, however for a moment?
- Petrol has been drawn out of that tank, through the filter then into the lines.
- On a bigger run it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the fuel injectors.
- Flushing the lines, the filter dealt with, occasionally more: this job expands as the distance does.
That line falls there since diesel protects your high-pressure pump and your injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not. In the tank, left alone, petrol does no harm. As soon as it's pumped, petrol starts grinding whatever moves it.
Hove Edge, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call
A little preparation is the difference between a van that finds you and a technician that circles.
- HD6 2 plus the rest of the postcode is the ideal way to begin telling us where you are.
- A road name helps: Upper Green Lane, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.
- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Aldi, for instance — and it is much easier to find.
- Tell us what your car is — make, model — and confirm it's diesel.
- Tell us which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for Hove Edge.
- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — whichever tells us how much.
- If it's run, how far and how hard — and if it's run at all.
- The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire or company contracts — which is why it's quicker to settle whose vehicle it is before our engineers arrive.
Phone 0333 366 0103 once you have got that ready — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .
Waiting for a fuel drain around Hove Edge: what to do
Help, however well meant, is what does the harm whilst you wait. So stick to these.
- Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere exposed, get yourself clear of the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it is, stay with it.
- A kind passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anyone checking it still does the trick, or rolling it a few yards.
- Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out a second time.
- Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is hazardous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Don't try a home-made drain.
- The ignition remains off. Even for the radio or the windows.
The fuel drain, step by step, once the van arrives
- Fuel, amount, whether it's run: those answers decide the job, and that's why we give a price after them instead of before.
- Draining it is how the mixture gets taken out of the tank.
- If it ran, your lines are holding petrol that has shifted beyond the tank — so they are purged.
- Where the vehicle has a workable filter, it's swapped; otherwise, cleared.
- The fuel system is primed on clean diesel.
- Starting it. Once the system is primed with clean diesel, our engineers fire it up and check it runs smoothly.
Till it runs on clean diesel, our technicians stay with it. When it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual, and the vehicle returns to normal driving straight away.
Hove Edge, after the fuel drain: back on the road
- Nothing special is needed after a start with clean diesel — ordinary driving is all.
- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop then call us a second time.
- The work may matter later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the documents.
- Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
