Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Howwood?

Do not turn on your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not run, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, throughout Howwood and the remainder of Renfrewshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. We shall tell you what the next move will be. Ring us — this comes before all else.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up. Turned on all the same? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually can't run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Motorists get that backwards. It is not all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition is left off also — flick it on and you commonly prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for exactly those parts.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • We would rather travel to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Main Street, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Before you ring, gather your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts PA9 1 — that is what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • What went in, approximately how many litres, and also whether your car has fired — the three answers settle the full visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Can petrol be drained from your diesel at the forecourt?

Most of this work begins at the pump, so a large portion of it gets completed at one. Still at Morrisons? Then that is generally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the station.

Nowhere other than a forecourt can the mistake be spotted with the engine still unrun. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the lines as well as that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers deal with it where the car sits. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The attendants will generally happily push it out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Service in Howwood

These same runs carry us to Spateston, Corseford, Millikenpark, Tandlehill and Cartside as well as Howwood, which is a village.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and most places around Renfrewshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Presuming is the habit to skip, above all on the border or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Ring us to check.

See the map for the patch covered here. Your vehicle does not need to come to us. We work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both ready. Your Ford Focus will have seemed perfectly usual on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol motor generally won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, because behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

Chance the drive home from Howwood Inn? Don't. It will fire up and it will move off perfectly well, which is the trouble — a diesel on a thinned tank runs generally while wearing the parts your fuel should be protecting. Leave the Dacia Duster and phone.

Here is the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the usual Corsehead Wood call — a diesel BMW 5 Series, out there without complaint and back down on power, rough at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it escapes past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the motor was built around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Unfamiliar locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical rather than sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Fuelled up close to Howwood Parish Church without thinking, in a diesel Peugeot 208 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone spots it, and miles is what settles how much petrol ends up at your injectors.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Kia Sportage that got by The Church Of Christ The King needs the circuit cleared, not cleared.

Stuck by the roadside in Howwood

The opportunity to pull over anywhere suitable does not come to everybody. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on George Street since you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Okay right there? Sit beside it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: restart the car to reach somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. However inconvenient the spot, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that's much better for your car than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under 10 miles from Howwood, the local M8 is what matters here. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they come are typically a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Don't restart it to move it. Get off at the next safe junction and turn off. It affects what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

A little about Howwood

Howwood is a village in Renfrewshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 43 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Howwood lies approximately 13 miles west of Glasgow and is surrounded by nearby places such as Spateston, Corseford, and Millikenpark. Howwood has a population of around 1546 residents and is located in a scenic riverside setting. Howwood is also relatively distant from London, being around 348 miles away.

The visit around Howwood, step by step

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • We empty your tank of all the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Once it's started, our engineers make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

Howwood AdBlue removal is a different matter

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — do not start it — yet this issue isn't. The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Howwood has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Howwood?

What moves the figure is laid out below, as this job isn't one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single price on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and if a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel queries from Howwood motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Howwood?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the station's permission we visit Esso and the other forecourts locally all the time.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It's recoverable a lot more often than people expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Is the car still with you?

Never switch the car back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
