Hythe: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Hythe and the rest of Kent, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Ring us and we can show you what happens next before you attempt anything else.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And once started, don't rely on it: your fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Don't put diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it only gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • We'd much rather get to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort out than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Bank Street, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Our van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning CT21 5, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you call.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, about how many litres, plus if the car has been run. Those responses determine whatever happens next.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, parked at Sandling since breakfast? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is harmless. It was the journey in that sucked thinned diesel through your pump. Phone before you fetch the vehicle.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Ring us. It's twenty to nine at the gates of Hythe Bay CofE Primary School, you're late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and though three miles in your Nissan Qashqai sounds like nothing, fuel is delivered to demand, and a rushed dash asks for plenty of that.

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then phone us. Happy on the way out to Hythe Cricket Ground, gutless on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol thins diesel; thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Mercedes E-Class travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

Rarely the problem, the spot. On-street is the usual place our technicians work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from close to Rupert (Mary Tourtel), is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your BMW 1 Series gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, the lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — as by now the worst of it is in your lines, not that tank.

Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfilled diesel Audi A6 telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by St Michael's Church Centre or anywhere else, and do not restart it to find a better place.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?

A large chunk of this job gets completed at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly starts. Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, and so if you're still at Esso that is usually where this drain gets done.

The forecourt is the one location the mistake can be stopped before the motor has started. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you roll it. Worth it. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Do we serve your end of Hythe?

Orchard Valley, Saltwood, Pennypot, Pedlinge, Sandling — each of them on the rounds that take us over to Hythe itself, a coastal town.

Our technicians still come. Those names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all towns in Kent, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Guessing is the mistake to skip, particularly on the border or somewhere the satnav fails. Contact us to enquire.

The map marks the patch this page includes. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Roadside stops around Hythe

Not everybody gets a chance to stop anywhere safe. A routine call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge beside Prospect Road or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Stay by your car while it is safe to sit in it, but clear of the car when it isn't. Never start it up to reach a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into your fuel system. However inconvenient the location, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 3 miles out of Hythe, your M20 is what counts here. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are usually a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Come off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and never start the vehicle to reposition. Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring changes.

Hythe itself

Hythe is a coastal town in Kent, situated on the south coast of England, approximately 60 miles from London. Hythe sits at a low elevation of around 7 metres, looking out over the English Channel. Hythe is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is located near to other places such as Orchard Valley, Saltwood, and Pennypot. Hythe has a population of around 10,026 residents.

Our call-out around Hythe, step by step

  • Our technicians check what was put in, how much, and if the engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • Our technicians empty your tank of the tainted mixture.
  • Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clean your filter, so what is left in your system isn't what caused the issue.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to set off. We do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

Hythe AdBlue removal is a separate problem

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is the same — do not start it — yet this problem is not. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Hythe page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Hythe?

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what moves it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank holds.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for a van.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Hythe motorists

At a petrol station in Hythe, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done. We work at JET and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more commonly than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Switched off is how it remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists assume, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Across Kent and in Hythe: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
