Illingworth: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not started the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Illingworth or the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. We can show you what your next stage is. Ring us — it goes before all else.
Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Don't fire it up. Turned on regardless? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for several miles. People get that backwards. It's not all right — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
- Diesel burns, and before it burns it lubricates — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone too: switching it on is usually enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into just those parts.
- Do not thin it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Tewit Lane, anywhere — a difficult location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a motor that never moved.
- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning HX2 9, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has been run. Those responses decide everything that follows.
At the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel
Pumps are where the job often kicks off, and where a fair chunk of that ends. If you're still on the forecourt at Morrisons, that is normally where this drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.
Before the motor has started — a garage is the only place it gets spotted. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key.
Away from the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Very much worth it. Shifting the car four lengths doesn't warrant starting the engine.
Do our technicians reach your end of Illingworth?
These same runs bring us to Holdsworth, Holmfield, Bradshaw, Upper Brockholes and Catherine Slack besides Illingworth, which is a residential suburb.
There are separate pages for nearly all places in West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing whatsoever about if we come. On the border, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Phone and enquire instead of assuming.
The ground this page spans sits on our map. Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the car never needs to come to us.
Twenty to nine outside Trinity Academy Whitehill, running late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone us. Three miles in the Peugeot 3008 seems like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a frantic morning drive asks for plenty.
What we'll ask about is if that run there was brief and cold, because that is where petrol is least able to burn properly — and anything that does not burn can get past the piston rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked in the car park by the pub in the village with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing deteriorates as it sits, and so leave the car there overnight then phone in the morning.
Here's the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the normal Tar Hill Plantation call — a diesel Ford Kuga, out there without fuss and back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it escapes past those gaps and not building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the engine was engineered round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.
Most of these happen somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than slapdash — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW X1, a fill-up by Oats Royd Fishing Complex that you did not think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.
The filter, your lines, the pump and its rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. So your tank is not where most of the problem waits by this point, and a diesel Citroen C3 that got close to St Mary's Church needs your system purged rather than cleared.
Stopped on the kerbside anywhere in Illingworth?
Not everyone has the chance to pull in somewhere safe. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge beside School Crescent or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.
Safe right there? Wait by it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. We will take the van to an inconvenient place without any bother, and for the vehicle that is far better than carrying on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
This is where the M606 comes in — under 10 miles away from Illingworth. A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and do not restart it to move it. It alters what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

What happens when our technicians reach you in Illingworth
- Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- Away goes the contaminated mixture.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
- We pour clean diesel in and prime your system.
- Once it is started, we check it runs correctly on clean diesel.
The car is then ready for you to drive away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare.
A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Illingworth
The fault isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — never crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.
Both are ours. There is a separate Illingworth page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Illingworth costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain
What shifts the price is laid out below, as this job is not one job and we can't truthfully put a single price on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for a van.
A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel questions from Illingworth motorists
At a petrol station in Illingworth, can you do a fuel drain there?
A big portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer there and then.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Whether the motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture pulled through it.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It is salvageable much more commonly than drivers expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
Turned off is the way the car stays.
If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. Cold and still, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
