Petrol in Diesel

Incline Top: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on the engine. While the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not run, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Incline Top and the rest of Merthyr Tydfil, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Call us before everything else starts, so you will know what comes after that.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up — and don't rely on it if it does start. This is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and pulls away without complaint for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It's wearing out your fuel system as you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A car that has never moved is the quickest one to handle, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on A4102? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An odd spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning CF47 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.
  • What went in, about how much, plus if the motor has run — these three answers determine the whole job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, parked at Merthyr Tydfil since this morning? The day has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is inert. It was the drive in that sucked thinned diesel through your pump. Ring us before you move the vehicle.

A diesel pump supplies fuel to demand, and a hurried morning dash needs plenty — so three miles in the Skoda Octavia feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by the local primary school, running late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone us.

It will start. It will drive off just fine. That's the problem, since a diesel on a thinned tank acts typically whilst wearing down the parts its fuel should be lubricating. So no, do not risk the trip home from the norton — leave the Peugeot 308 then ring us.

Nothing gets worse while it waits. Whatever the diesel Nissan Qashqai did on the way to Old Thomastown Park, it is doing none of that now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.

No warning exists for this, which is why motors in that position generally get driven a second time before somebody calls. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went soft and your idle turned ragged after a few streets, and the diesel Audi A6 is now resting close to St Illtyds Rc Church. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly instead of an engine packing up. Switch off. Call us.

Draining petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

A fair chunk of the work gets completed at a forecourt, as that is where it usually begins. The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the site's consent, that is a spot our technicians work, and often.

At a forecourt, this gets halted with your engine never fired, and nowhere else manages that. The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key settle how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where your car stands.

Staff will generally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the offer. Shifting it four lengths doesn't justify cranking the motor.

Will we serve your part of Incline Top?

Penyard, Pen-y-Darren, Mountain Hare, Penyrheol, Twynyrodyn — each of those on the runs that carry us over to Incline Top itself, a residential suburb.

Not on the list? It means nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all places across Merthyr Tydfil have a page of their own somewhere on this site. On the boundary, or anywhere your satnav struggles with? Contact us to ask rather than assuming.

This map is the area this page covers. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

Incline Top: broken down where you pulled up

Not everybody has a chance to pull over anywhere safe. A normal call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge of Incline Top or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Whether you remain by the motor or move clear of it hangs on if sitting in it looks safe. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: restart it to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. A technician coming to an inconvenient place is no trouble for us, and it's a lot better for the car than driving on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Here is where the local M4 counts, under 25 miles out of Incline Top. A misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Come off at the next safe junction, turn off, and never restart it to move it. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what our technicians bring.

Incline Top itself

Incline Top is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Merthyr Tydfil, with a mix of terraced housing and a population of around 1890 residents. Incline Top sits at an elevation of 279 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Incline Top is located near other local places such as Penyard and Pen-y-Darren, and is within commuting distance of Newport, which is 19.3 miles away.

The visit around Incline Top, step by step

  • The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
  • The tainted fuel is drawn out of your tank.
  • Our technicians purge the fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what's remaining in the system is not what created the problem.
  • New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • It is run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running properly.

From there, you are ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and as all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Incline Top?

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Incline Top page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Incline Top pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One number wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Incline Top

Fuel drains on a Incline Top petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Applegreen is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix sucked through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more regularly than drivers assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with the car?

Never turn the car on again.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the car stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
