Innsworth: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With the tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Innsworth and the remainder of Gloucestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Ring us before anything else starts, so you'll know what follows from there.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Never start the car. Fired up anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for a couple of miles. Most people get that reversed. It isn't okay — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
- Leave your ignition off also. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually all it takes to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
- Don't thin it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Parton Road? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started motor.
- Keep your position ready before you call. A postcode that starts GL3 1 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if the car has fired. Those three answers settle the full visit.
Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?
A big chunk of this work gets completed at a forecourt, because that's where it mostly kicks off. Still at Esso? Then that is usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.
Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the one location this ends up caught. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key.
Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.
Will our engineers cover your end of Innsworth?
Down Hatherley, Churchdown, Twigworth, Longlevens, Elmbridge — each of those on the runs that bring us out to Innsworth too, a village.
If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of locations across Gloucestershire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Ring us and enquire instead of assuming, above all when you are on the boundary or somewhere your satnav misreads.
The patch the page includes appears on our map. All of that is ground our engineers serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never drive the vehicle anywhere.
Twenty to nine. By St Mary's Catholic Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Switch your hazards on, leave the engine alone, then phone us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a run taken in a rush needs a great deal of that.
Three answers settle most of the work: what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we reach the vehicle in the car park outside The Hare and Hounds. After that the contaminated mixture comes out of that tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Ford Focus has a serviceable filter, it comes off. When clean diesel is in and the fuel system bled, our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs correctly before you set off.
Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and parked your diesel Peugeot 208 up by St John the Evangelist a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Phone us and leave the vehicle off. The short drive truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, so diluted fuel has reached the filter and the pump — which is why we clean the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank.
Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — almost no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Vauxhall Insignia, a fill-up close to GL3 Community Hub that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at your injectors.
No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position usually get driven a second time before anybody rings. Don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned lumpy after a couple of streets, and the diesel Skoda Superb is now sitting by Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Catholic Church. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure fully rather than a motor failing. Turn off. Ring us.
Roadside stops in Innsworth
Not everyone gets a sensible spot to pull over. Set off, then noticed? Ended up by the verge beside Innsworth Lane, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.
Safe where you are? Sit beside it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it. Do not fire it up to get to a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into the system. Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to a tricky place, and that's no bother for us.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
Here is where the local M5 comes in, under 3 miles out of Innsworth. A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are usually a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.
Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it. On a longer run — anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

What happens when we arrive with you in Innsworth
- We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
- The tank is drained completely.
- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that caused the trouble.
- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
- The motor is started and tested to confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.
After that it's ready to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught early, lasting damage is very rare.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Innsworth is a distinct matter
If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't start it — but this issue isn't. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.
Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Innsworth page. Both are ours to handle.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Innsworth?
We can't put one number on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What moves it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much your tank holds.
- The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.
Petrol in diesel questions from Innsworth motorists
Fuel drains on a Innsworth petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a large part of this work takes place. Our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.
Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?
It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more often than motorists assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
It's not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct issue. So no. The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to take it to a main dealer, as we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.
Standing next to it?
Never turn the car back on.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
