Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Intack

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Intack or the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before all else happens, and you'll know what follows from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear. This is why you do not fire it up, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually enough to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of that tank and into just those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so don't put diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Fecitt Brow, anywhere — an odd place for us beats a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Have your position ready before you call. A postcode that starts BB1 2 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and the van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how much, and if your car has run. These three details decide the whole call-out.

Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has sent real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would close to double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can stay outside Blackburn perfectly happily. Call from the platform if simpler; standing over us whilst our engineers work isn't required.

Petrol in your Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Lidl, somewhere in Intack? Then phone us, and leave your engine out of that — not even to leave that spot. Somebody gets to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines purged, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile draws little, so these are often the easy jobs.

Try the trip home from The Intack Inn? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the problem — a diesel on a weakened tank behaves typically while wearing down the parts the fuel should be protecting. Park the Peugeot 308 then call us.

Out there normal, back gutless. If that was the run to Queen's Park, look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the tight gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Nissan Qashqai covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, call us.

By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that blend goes into the filter, into your lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Dacia Duster that made it near Masjide Moorul wants its system purged. Draining is not the same thing.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Intack

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at a forecourt?

A fair part of the work is completed at a forecourt, since that is where it often begins. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's agreement, that is a place our technicians work, and often.

Before the motor has fired — a garage is the one spot the mistake gets stopped. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car stands.

Roll it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Rolling the car four spaces doesn't warrant starting it.

Intack and the towns near it

Knuzden Brook, Shadsworth, Hole House, Green Bank, Queens Park — every one of these on the runs that carry us over to Intack too, a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for nearly all places around Lancashire, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list tells you nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Ring us and check instead of guessing, particularly where you are on the boundary or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.

The map shows the ground this page covers. Your vehicle never needs to travel to us. We operate over every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck at the roadside somewhere around Intack?

The chance to stop anywhere safe doesn't come to everybody. A routine call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge on Moorside Avenue or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Whether you sit by the motor or keep away from it depends on if being nearby feels wise. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to a tricky place, and that is no problem for us.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

The local M65 is the road that matters here, and it runs under a mile from Intack. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe exit then switch off. It affects what we bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.

Intack itself

Intack is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated near the River Darwen and close to Knuzden Brook. Intack sits at an elevation of 166 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Intack is located near several other local places, including Shadsworth and Hole House, and is around 10 miles from the city of Preston. Intack is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of approximately 183 miles.

What comes next when we get to you around Intack

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Out goes the contaminated mixture.
  • We purge the fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what is left in your system is not what caused the problem.
  • Our engineers put clean diesel in and prime your system.
  • When it's fired up, our technicians check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted soon, and because everything is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Intack is a different job

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never fire it up — but the problem isn't. Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Intack page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Intack?

We can't put one figure on this page honestly, since this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank takes.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Intack

I am on a forecourt in Intack. Can you drain the car here?

A big share of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement we work at Texaco and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the motor has run counts much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It's recoverable far more commonly than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate fault. So no. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and the car, still together?

The engine remains off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Intack and across Lancashire.
