Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Inverlochy?

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car needs while the fuel is still in the tank and the motor has not run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Inverlochy or the remainder of Highland, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Our technicians shall show you what the next move is. Contact us — that happens before anything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • While you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you do not start the vehicle, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime the system, which carries the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.
  • Never dilute it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we'd rather drive to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Nevis Road, turn the hazards on and leave the car there.
  • Before you dial, gather your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting PH33 6 — that's what decides whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what got in, approximately how much, plus whether the engine has been turned over. Your replies shape whatever happens next.

Phone before you collect it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat this morning, and the car at Fort William ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is idle, and any harm came on the run in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had weakened.

Petrol in the Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside Lidl, somewhere around Inverlochy? Then ring us, and leave the engine out of that — not even to leave the space. Somebody comes to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile pulls hardly anything, and so these are usually the straightforward jobs.

Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Whatever the diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Field of Hope Fort William, it is doing none of it now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but don't drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Phoning from close to Aluminium Worker? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for a van beside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself barely counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we'd much rather have a narrow bay than a car someone has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the BMW X1, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines purged, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in the fuel lines and not the tank.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, the idle turned lumpy, and the diesel Skoda Superb is now waiting close to An Aird. That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly instead of the motor packing up — and because there's no dashboard light for it, motors in that position normally get driven a second time before anyone rings. Don't. Turn it off and phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Inverlochy

On a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this job usually begins, and where a large portion of that closes. If you're still on the forecourt at Gleaner, that is typically where this drain takes place — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement.

At a garage, the mistake is caught with the engine never started, and nowhere else does that. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines as well as your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we deal with it where the vehicle stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

The attendants will usually happily push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing. Firing the car just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Can we reach your part of Inverlochy?

The same runs get us to Claggan, Fort William, Lochyside, Caol and Camusnagaul along with Inverlochy, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for most places in Highland, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Close to a boundary, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Ring us and ask instead of guessing.

Look at the map for the ground shown here. Your car doesn't need to travel to us. We work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck on the kerb somewhere around Inverlochy?

Not everybody has the chance to pull over somewhere sensible. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge beside Abrach Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Stay with the motor when it's sensible to wait there, and clear of the vehicle when it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. We'll take our van to a tricky spot without any fuss, and for the vehicle that's much better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has moved

This is where the local M9 comes into it — over 50 miles from Inverlochy. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next junction that's sensible, stop there, and don't restart the car to reposition. On a longer drive — anything approaching the over 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what we bring.

Inverlochy itself

Inverlochy is a coastal suburban area in the Scottish Highlands, situated near the shores of Loch Linnhe. Inverlochy sits at a low elevation of around 11 metres, close to the nearby settlements of Claggan and Lochyside. Inverlochy is located near the town of Fort William, and is approximately 56 miles west of the city of Inverness. Inverlochy has a mix of housing types, with flats being a predominant form of accommodation.

What we do when we arrive with you around Inverlochy

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.
  • That tank gets emptied of everything.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • We turn it on and check it runs correctly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Inverlochy?

The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — do not fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and residue.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Inverlochy page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Inverlochy

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what varies it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much that tank holds.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel queries from Inverlochy motorists

Fuel drains on a Inverlochy petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this happens. Often, provided the site consents: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. What settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving moves the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not put back what petrol has thinned. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with your vehicle?

Keep it shut off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
