Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Iwade?

If you have not started the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car requires while the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Iwade or the remainder of Kent, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. A single call to us will be sufficient: our engineers shall explain what comes next. Try this straight away.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Fired up regardless? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. People get that muddled. It is not okay — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Leave the ignition off also. Diesel performs two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it protects that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is usually enough to prime that system, which moves the petrol out of your tank and into precisely those components.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Woodpecker Drive? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A tricky place suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting ME9 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
  • Three facts determine your whole call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the rough quantity of it, and if anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A fast fill-up on the road in. Somewhere around eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Renault Clio has waited outside Kemsley for three hours. Phone then leave it where it stands. What counts is the trip in, because diesel both combusts and — before that — greases the pump and the fuel injectors, but petrol only ever burns. Those few miles worked your pump on a fluid robbed of much of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park gives any of that back. Hence the question about distance rather than hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave the keys alone until our engineers get there.

How much fuel your pump has drawn is what we're actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry we like sounds like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now shut off at Asda.

Try the journey home from The Woolpack? No. It will fire up and it will pull away just fine, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank runs typically while wearing the components your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Nissan Qashqai and phone us.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, an uneven idle, knocking: that is a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes E-Class telling you what is wrong. Don't start the vehicle to find a better location — turn off where you have stopped, near Iwade Church or anywhere else.

By now your tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and the mix goes into your filter, into the lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Ford Kuga that made it by Iwade Barn needs its system flushed. Draining is not the same thing.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Iwade

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Plenty of the work starts at a pump, which means a big part of that is completed on site. If you are still at the forecourt at Asda, that's typically where the drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent.

Before your engine has fired — a garage is the one location this gets caught. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

The staff will normally offer to push it away from the pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Service in Iwade

Iwade is a coastal village, and we are out to it and to anywhere by it on the same rounds: Kemsley, Howt Green, Milton Regis, Cold Harbour and Grove Park.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around Kent, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing at all about if our engineers come. Guessing is the habit to skip, especially on the boundary or somewhere the satnav struggles. Contact us to ask.

Check our map for the patch shown here. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is territory our technicians cover, and none of that needs the car to move to us.

Stuck on the kerb somewhere around Iwade?

The opportunity to pull in anywhere safe doesn't come to everyone. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of The Waterway because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Whether you remain by your car or keep clear of it hangs on whether sitting there is safe. Do not fire it up to reach a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into your fuel system. We will bring the van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for the car that's a lot better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where your M2 comes in, under 5 miles from Iwade. A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and do not start it to reposition. It alters what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

Where's Iwade?

Iwade is a village on the north Kent coast, situated near the mouth of the Swale estuary at an elevation of around 9 metres. Iwade lies within commuting distance of London, approximately 38 miles to the west, and is close to the nearby towns of Sittingbourne and Southend-on-Sea. Iwade has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent in the village. Iwade is bordered by other small communities, including Kemsley and Milton Regis.

The visit around Iwade, step by step

  • Our technicians establish what was put in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • Our engineers drain that tank of all the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that caused the problem.
  • We put fresh diesel in and bleed the system.
  • The engine is started and tested to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Iwade

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — do not start the car — yet this fault is not. The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal around Iwade has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. We handle both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Iwade?

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what moves it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach your car and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Iwade motorists

Fuel drains on a Iwade petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work gets done. Often, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our engineers answer straight away.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the vehicle off. Driving moves the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Turned off is how the car stays.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
