Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kelvinside?

If you have not turned on your engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Kelvinside or the remainder of Glasgow City, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. A single ring to us is plenty: our engineers shall explain what happens next. Make it right away.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Do not crank it. Started anyway? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. People get that reversed. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Flicking the ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only hands you a larger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We'd sooner get to a tricky place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on Redlands Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Before you ring, have your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning G12 0 — that is what determines whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Three replies settle the full job: the liquid you tipped in, the ballpark measure involved, plus if anything has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

On a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Pumps are where this work often kicks off, and where a fair chunk of it finishes. Still at BP? Then that's typically where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.

At a garage, it is caught with the motor never run, and nowhere else manages it. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and your lines along with the tank. That's still not a calamity, and we sort it out where the car stands. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Worth it. Rolling the car four lengths does not merit firing the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Kelvinside

The difficult part is that bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height bar on the way in that determines if a technician can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one outside Waitrose, mention how much room there is about you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our engineers cover often. Should there be no room to work alongside your diesel Renault Clio, it gets rolled with the motor off, and not out of fuss over a couple of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the blend leaves that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer space have quietly made a bigger job of what was merely a car sitting still.

You'll be advised to shift it clear of the gateway and deal with it later. Don't. On the zig-zags at the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol beyond your filter towards the pump. Let them complain. Phone us.

Three replies decide most of the work: what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at the vehicle in the car park at Òran Mór. Next the contaminated mixture comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are flushed, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable filter, it comes off. When new diesel is in and the system bled, our engineers start it and make sure it runs properly before you drive away.

None of it is the engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it's why the normal Glasgow Botanic Gardens call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Ford Focus drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, the idle rough and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision components it passes through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built escapes past clearances, delivery turns up weaker and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once your fuel is corrected.

Why we're direct about not driving on: your pump sits upstream of the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn pump gives off travels onward with the fuel. Leave the Peugeot 3008 near Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church then phone us.

Will our technicians serve your side of Kelvinside?

Kelvinside is a residential suburb, and so our vans go out to it and to anywhere around it on the same journeys: Hyndland, North Kelvin, Dowanhill, Partickhill and Kelvindale.

There are pages for most places across Glasgow City, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list says nothing at all about whether our engineers come. Contact us and check instead of assuming, especially where you're on a border or anywhere your satnav struggles with.

The ground this page covers appears on the map. Every bit of it is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

Kelvinside: stuck where you pulled up

The chance to pull in somewhere suitable does not fall to everybody. A common call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge beside Kirklee Circus or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Remain beside your car if it is safe to be in it, yet out of the vehicle if it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. A technician coming to an awkward place is no problem for us, and it is far better for your car than carrying on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Your M8 is the road that counts now, and runs under 3 miles from Kelvinside. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are typically a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. It changes what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

A bit about Kelvinside

Kelvinside is a suburban area in Glasgow City, situated on the banks of the River Kelvin. Kelvinside sits at an elevation of around 40 metres, with its riverside location influencing the local landscape. Kelvinside is characterised by its predominantly flat-type housing, which is typical of many areas in Glasgow City. Kelvinside is close to neighbouring areas such as Hyndland, North Kelvin, and Dowanhill, and is approximately 2.6 miles from Glasgow city centre.

What our engineers do when we arrive with you in Kelvinside

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Our technicians clear your tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that started the trouble.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • The engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Kelvinside

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is the same — don't fire it up — yet the problem is not. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Kelvinside page. Both are ours to handle.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Kelvinside

Our technicians can't put one number on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank holds.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Kelvinside

I'm on a forecourt in Kelvinside. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts around town all the time.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It's fixable much more commonly than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to put up with it, because the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Keep it turned off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists expect, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.
