Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kemnay

If you have not fired up your engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the petrol is still in that tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Kemnay or the rest of Aberdeenshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Just one ring to us will be sufficient: we will explain what comes after this. Make this straight away.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start the car. And if started, never depend on it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: switching it on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Aquithie Road? Hazards on, then keep the car there. An awkward location works for us better than a started motor.
  • A van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts AB51 5, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you ring.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what went in, approximately how much, plus whether the motor has been turned over. Those responses settle everything that follows.

How far you went is what we care about, not how long your car has been sitting — and this is why. Diesel has two roles on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before burning it lubricates the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a rushed fill-up on the drive in, it dawning on you at about eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked at Kintore since quarter past eight shows those couple of miles were travelled with your pump working on a fuel robbed of most of its protection. Call us then keep it right where it stands.

Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, and your receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, call us. Three miles in your Ford Focus sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel on demand — while a hurried morning dash asks for plenty.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Mercedes E-Class did on the way to Bogbeth Park, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the car home to buy any.

Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by Kemnay Village Hall or anywhere else, and never restart it to find a better spot.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the motor packing up — and with no warning for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven once more before anyone phones. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Audi Q3 now waiting close to Mither Tap Steen. Switch it off and ring us.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at a forecourt?

Pumps are where this work mostly kicks off, and where a good part of it ends. The drain usually happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's consent, that is somewhere our technicians work, and routinely.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can this be spotted with your engine still cold. Our engineers can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what decide that.

Out from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the vehicle. Worth it. Cranking the car to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Places our team reach in Kemnay

Craigearn, Aquhythie, Grantlodge, Burnhervie, Blairdaff — each of these on the rounds that carry us over to Kemnay too, a village.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and most places across Aberdeenshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Close to the border, or somewhere your phone can't find? Phone to enquire instead of assuming.

The map shows the area this page spans. Your car does not need to travel to us. We operate over every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Kemnay: stuck where you parked

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over somewhere sensible. If you noticed after setting off and ended up on the verge beside Bremner Way, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a routine call for us rather than an odd one.

Whether you wait beside the car or stand clear of it turns on if being nearby looks safe. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. Driving on does the car far more harm than a van coming out to a difficult spot, and that is no bother for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the M90 comes in — over 50 miles from Kemnay. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. It changes what our engineers bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

A bit about Kemnay

Kemnay is a village situated on the banks of the River Don in Aberdeenshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Kemnay sits at an elevation of around 85 metres, approximately 14.5 miles west of Aberdeen. Kemnay is close to several nearby settlements, including Craigearn, Aquhythie, and Grantlodge. Kemnay has a population of around 2181 people, making it a small but established community in the region.

Once our engineers reach you around Kemnay: what happens

  • The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • The polluted fuel is pulled out of your tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • When it is started, we confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off. Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Kemnay is a separate matter

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is unchanged — never crank it — yet this fault isn't. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Kemnay page. Both are ours to deal with.

Kemnay prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank takes.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Kemnay motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Kemnay?

A good part of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians visit Morrisons and the other forecourts around town routinely.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more commonly than motorists expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a change, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct fault. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, since we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Still with your vehicle?

Switched off is the way it remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists fear.
