Kendon: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not turned on your engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Kendon or the rest of Caerphilly, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Just one call our way will be enough: our technicians shall tell you what happens next. Make it first.
The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Never crank it. Started all the same? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally won't run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. Most people get that muddled. It isn't all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it combusts it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is frequently enough to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of your tank then into exactly those parts.
- Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Cemaes Road? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A difficult location works for us better than a started motor.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning NP11 3, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what got in, roughly how much, and if your car has been started. The responses decide whatever comes after.
Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sat outside Newbridge since first thing? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is inert. It was the drive in that sucked weakened diesel through your pump. Phone before you fetch the car.
Try the trip home from The New Forge? Don't. It will start and it will move off quite happily, which is the issue — a diesel on a thinned tank acts generally while wearing down the parts your fuel should be protecting. Park the Dacia Duster then call us.
Out there normal, back flat. If that was the drive to Pen-y-fan Country Park, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the fine clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel BMW 5 Series covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, call us.
Ringing from near Horeb Chapel? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it's on. Room for a van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself scarcely counts: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a tight spot than a car someone has driven somewhere simpler. Then it is a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines purged, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in the fuel lines and not that tank.
By this point the tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the fuel filter, your lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Hyundai Tucson that got by Trinant Methodist Church needs your circuit purged, not cleared.
Can petrol be drained from your diesel on a forecourt?
The job starts at a forecourt, typically. Quite often it ends on site too. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere we work, and regularly.
Nowhere but a forecourt can the mistake be spotted with your engine still unstarted. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and your lines along with your tank. That's still not a calamity, and our technicians sort it out where the vehicle stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.
The attendants will generally help you wheel the car out from the pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.
Kendon and the towns near it
Being a residential suburb, Kendon has a regular call, and the villages round about come with it on that same round: Croespenmaen and Pentref-y-groes, Millbrook and Rhiw, Oakdale.
There are separate pages for most locations in Caerphilly, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Close to a boundary, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Call us and enquire instead of guessing.
See the map for the area included here. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the vehicle does not need to move to us.
Stranded on the kerb anywhere around Kendon?
A chance to pull over somewhere suitable does not fall to everybody. A common call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, finished up along the verge beside Kendon Road or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.
Stay with the car when it's sensible to wait in it, but clear of it if it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We will bring the van to a difficult place without any trouble, and for the car that is far better than pressing on.
Driven it already? Stop, and read below
This is where your M4 counts, under 10 miles from Kendon. A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.
Take the first junction that is sensible, stop there, and never start the car to reposition. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what our engineers bring.
Where is Kendon?
Kendon is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Caerphilly, with a mix of detached housing and a population of around 1881 residents. Kendon sits at an elevation of 231 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Kendon is located near other local places such as Croespenmaen, Pentref-y-groes, and Millbrook, and is approximately 9.5 miles from Newport. Kendon is also within commuting distance of major cities, with London around 130.7 miles away.
What happens when our engineers reach you in Kendon
- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.
- The polluted mixture is pulled out of that tank.
- Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's remaining in your system isn't what started the problem.
- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
- Your engine is started and tested to make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.
That has it ready to drive away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Kendon?
Never crank it: that opening instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.
Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Kendon page. Both are ours to handle.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Kendon?
One price wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:
- Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much the tank takes.
- The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether our van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.
Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.
Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Kendon
At a petrol station around Kendon, can you do a fuel drain there?
Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this happens. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement we attend Texaco and the other forecourts around town all the time.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. What settles how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that's the query.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?
Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and keep it off. Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It is not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to live with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later on.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.
Waiting next to it?
Leave the car shut off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
Call-out fuel draining in Kendon and throughout Caerphilly — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
