Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kenton Bar? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Kenton Bar and the rest of Tyne and Wear. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still inside that tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Our engineers will show you what the following stage will be. Phone — it goes before all else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for several miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not fire it up. And once started, never depend on it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Kenton Lane? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A difficult spot suits us better than a started engine.
  • A van arriving instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts NE5 3, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you call.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how much, and also whether the car has fired. These three answers decide the whole visit.

Phone before you drive the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and it at Metrocentre ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is harmless, and any wear happened on the trip in, when the pump was taking diesel that petrol had weakened.

The complicated part is that bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height limit on the way in that settles whether a technician can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Spar, mention how much space there is about you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we attend often. Should there be no space to work next to your diesel Volkswagen Passat, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of fuss over a handful of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the mix exits your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer bay have gradually made a harder job of what was simply a motor standing still.

You head off at the end, once we have fired it up and confirmed it runs properly on fresh diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park at The Peacock, the tainted fuel comes out of your tank, the lines get cleaned and the fuel filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a replaceable one. Everything begins with three questions when we get to the car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Why we are blunt about not driving on: the pump sits before the injectors, so whatever a worn-out pump loses travels onward with the fuel. Leave the Mercedes E-Class close to Small step pyramid and phone us.

Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — by Mallowburn Crescent Shopping Parade or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfilled diesel BMW X1 telling you what is wrong.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Kenton Bar

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job mostly begins, and where a large share of it finishes. The drain usually happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's permission, that is a place we work, and routinely.

Nowhere but a forecourt can this be caught with the motor still unstarted. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where the car sits.

The attendants will normally offer to wheel it away from the pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing. Starting the car to move four car lengths isn't.

Places our vans cover near Kenton Bar

Being a neighbourhood, Kenton Bar has a frequent call, while its neighbours round about come with it on that same trip: Cowgate and Kenton, Fawdon and Blakelaw, Kenton Bank Foot.

Not on the list? That says nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and most towns in Tyne and Wear have a page of their own somewhere on the site. On the border, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Contact us and enquire rather than presuming.

This map shows the area the page covers. Every bit of that is territory our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

Stopped at the roadside anywhere around Kenton Bar?

Some people find no sensible place to pull over at all. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Kenton Bar because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Clear of your car while it is not sensible to be inside, with it when it is. Don't fire it up to reach a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the fuel system. A van heading to an awkward location is no bother for us, and it's much better for the car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull in, then read below

This is where the Central Motorway East comes in, under 3 miles from Kenton Bar. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not restart it to move it. Pull off at the first sensible junction then switch off. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you phone. It changes what our technicians bring.

About Kenton Bar

Kenton Bar is a locality situated in the inland area of Tyne and Wear, approximately 2.7 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne. Kenton Bar sits at an elevation of around 121 metres, with nearby places including Cowgate, Kenton, and Fawdon. Kenton Bar is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing and is home to a population of around 2957 residents. Kenton Bar is located in the North East region of England, about 249.6 miles from London.

Once we arrive with you in Kenton Bar: what follows

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.
  • Our technicians drain that tank of the tainted mixture.
  • Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is remaining in the system isn't what created the issue.
  • We put fresh diesel in and prime the system.
  • When it's fired up, our technicians confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Kenton Bar?

Don't crank it: that opening step holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and residue.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal in Kenton Bar has its own page with the full story — including why it is usually the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Kenton Bar?

What shifts the price is set out below, since this job is not one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much that tank takes.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Kenton Bar

At a petrol station around Kenton Bar, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Switched off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people expect.
