Kilcoo: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Stop, and keep your engine off — not on, and not for a moment to shift the car. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is normally a simple drain and a flush, done where the car stands, and what you do in the coming few minutes settles that far more than anything else. What follows is the order from this point, wherever in Kilcoo you are.
Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off
In this order, all before everything else:
- Keys out of the ignition. Switching the ignition on can be enough to prime your fuel system, while priming draws petrol out of the tank towards the components it harms. Keep the car off completely.
- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it just makes you with extra of the same blend.
- Hazard lights on. If you're anywhere near moving traffic, make your car simple to see before you do anything else.
- Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, get the attendants to help you push it clear of the pump. Don't start the vehicle to move it, however short the way.
- The first question you will be asked is which fuel went in and roughly how much — and your receipt says both. Hold on to it.
If you were still driving when you realised, stop somewhere sensible instead of pushing on for the services — on the M77, over 50 miles from Kilcoo, that means the next junction. Step one follows.
The fork in each Kilcoo fuel drain: has it run yet?
Everything after this point rests on one answer.
If it has not once been started:
- Just that tank has petrol in it so far.
- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is usually the whole job.
- This is the best case — which is the entire point of step one.
If it has been started, even for a second:
- From your tank, past the fuel filter, into the fuel lines: that's how far that petrol has got.
- On a longer run it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.
- Flushing the lines, the filter sorted, occasionally more: the job grows as the distance does.
The line falls there because diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not. Nothing is damaged by petrol that is only resting in a tank. Once it is pumped, petrol starts wearing whatever moves it.
What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Kilcoo
Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.
- Your location: a postcode beginning BT34 5 serves best.
- Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that's B7041 or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
- Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: tell us the one outside the local shops, and it is straightforward.
- The make and model of the car, and the fact it is a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Kilcoo page.
- How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.
- Has it run? If so, say how far it went, and the way it was driven.
- The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire or company contracts — so it's quicker to settle whose car it is before we get there.
Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.
Kilcoo fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait
During the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — so these count.
- Wait with the vehicle if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a few yards.
- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from the boot — none of that takes that petrol back out.
- Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is hazardous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond your tank. Do not drain the car yourself.
- The ignition remains off. Even for your radio or your windows.
The fuel drain, step by step, once our van arrives
- The quote comes after three questions, not before them — what went in, how much, and whether it's run — since those answers decide the job.
- Then that tank is emptied, and the contaminated fuel comes out.
- If it ran, your lines are carrying petrol that has shifted beyond that tank — so they're purged.
- Then the filter: changed where there's a usable one, cleared where there's not.
- Fresh diesel in, and the fuel system primed.
- The start. With fresh diesel in and the system bled, it is started and checked to confirm it runs properly.
Our technicians wait until it's running on clean diesel. If it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon, and your car returns to normal use at once.
After the fuel drain is done: driving around Kilcoo once more
- After it's been started on clean fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.
- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over and ring us back.
- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so keep your paperwork.
- The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
