Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kilgetty? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Kilgetty and the rest of Pembrokeshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still inside your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. A single call our way will be sufficient: we shall explain what comes from here. Make that straight away.
The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And if started, don't believe it: the fuel system is grinding while you drive.
- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why your ignition stays off also — turn it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for exactly those parts.
- Do not weaken it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- We would sooner get to an odd place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on Ryelands Lane, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
- Before you ring, gather your location. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting SA68 0 — that's what decides whether our van shows up or circles.
- Three details determine your whole job: the stuff you put in, the ballpark volume involved, plus if it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.
Don't run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that high-pressure pump in real volume on the drive in, and the trip back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is good. There is no need to stand over your Renault Megane outside the nearest station while the work goes on, and we'd far rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.
Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision components it runs through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the entire mechanism, and it explains the normal Folly Farm Country Gardens call: a diesel Peugeot 308 that went out there without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when your fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past gaps instead, and your engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is sorted.
Leave the Nissan Qashqai close to Kilgetty Begelly Community Centre then ring us. We are firm about not driving on since a worn pump loses, and what it gives off moves downstream with the fuel to the fuel injectors downstream.
Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger blend knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly nobody knows how full that tank was in a car picked up two days ago, and we work that out on the spot. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to authorise the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then call us about the Mercedes E-Class close to Church of St Mary.
That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the motor failing — and with no warning light for it, cars in that position typically get driven a second time before somebody rings. Don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Audi A6 now sitting close to Stepaside Ironworks. Turn it off and phone us.
On the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel
Most of this work starts at a pump, which means a good part of that gets done on site. The drain usually gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's permission, that's a place our technicians work, and regularly.
Nowhere except a forecourt can the mistake be stopped with the motor still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key.
Staff will generally chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Take the offer. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.
Can we serve your end of Kilgetty?
Begelly, Kingsmoor, Hill, Stepaside, Sardis — every one of them on our journeys that bring us over to Kilgetty as well, a coastal village.
We do come. Those names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations in Pembrokeshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Near the boundary, or anywhere the satnav can't find? Phone and enquire rather than guessing.
This map shows the ground this page spans. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is territory we work on, and none of it asks the car to move to us.
Kerbside stops around Kilgetty
Not everyone gets the chance to pull in somewhere sensible. Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge beside Shillingford Park, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.
Safe where you are? Sit by it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Do not start up your engine to limp the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into your fuel system. However awkward the spot, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.
Run it already? Stop, and see below
Here is where the local M4 comes in — under 50 miles from Kilgetty. A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.
Never start it to reposition. Come off at the next safe exit and switch off. Long run? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.
A little about Kilgetty
Kilgetty is a coastal village in Pembrokeshire, situated near the towns of Begelly and Saundersfoot, with Kingsmoor and Hill to the east. Kilgetty sits at an elevation of 74 metres, overlooking the coastline of south Wales. Kilgetty has a population of around 1247 people, predominantly living in detached housing. Kilgetty is located approximately 25 miles from St Davids, the smallest city in the UK.
What comes next when we arrive with you around Kilgetty
- We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
- Out flows the contaminated mixture.
- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that started the trouble.
- Our technicians put clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.
- Your engine is started and checked to confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
From that point, you're ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and as all of this is done where the car is, it never has to go to a workshop.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Kilgetty is a distinct matter
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the problem under it's a distinct one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Both are ours. There's a separate Kilgetty page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Kilgetty
Our technicians cannot put one price on this page frankly, as this job isn't one job. What shifts it:
- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
- Where your car is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.
Kilgetty motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Kilgetty?
Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work happens. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more often than motorists fear.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Is your car still with you?
Your engine stays off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
