Petrol in Diesel

Kingsbury: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started your engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has ended up in Kingsbury or the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Contact us before anything else begins, and you will see what comes after that.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up — and don't depend on it when it runs. That is the part motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel generally just cannot run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away quite happily for a few miles. It is not okay. It is grinding your fuel system as you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition off.
  • Never water down it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and we would sooner travel to an odd spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Boycroft Avenue, turn your hazards on and leave it there.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting NW9 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether your car has been run. Those answers determine whatever comes after.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

It begins at a pump, typically. Frequently the work wraps up there too. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is normally where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

The forecourt is the one place the mistake is stopped before your motor has run. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get by. Take the offer. Firing it just to move four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Kingsbury

The awkward part is the bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height limit on the way in that decides whether our van can reach you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one outside Da Food Island, say how much room there's round you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians cover regularly. Should there be no room to work beside your diesel Renault Megane, it gets shifted with the motor off, and not out of pedantry over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of that mix leaves that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer bay have gradually made a harder job of what was simply a vehicle standing still.

Twenty to nine. Outside Fryent Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put the hazard lights on, leave your ignition alone, then ring us. You might think three miles is nothing, in the Nissan Qashqai or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a run taken in a rush demands a great deal of it.

Normal on the way out, flat on the way back. If that's how that run to Church Lane Recreation Ground went, your tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther your Mercedes C-Class went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off and call us.

Phoning from near The Jennings Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for our van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself scarcely counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would far rather have a cramped spot than a car somebody has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Dacia Duster, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines purged, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not that tank.

No warning exists for this, which is why motors in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody phones. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned lumpy after a couple of streets, and the diesel Peugeot 208 is now waiting close to Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kingsbury. Softness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly rather than a motor packing up. Switch off. Ring us.

Kingsbury plus the villages beside it

These same trips carry us to The Hyde, West Hendon, Wembley Park, Colindale and Welsh Harp besides Kingsbury, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for nearly all towns around Greater London, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list says nothing about if we come. Close to a border, or somewhere your satnav can't find? Contact us to check rather than presuming.

The ground the page includes sits on our map. Your car doesn't need to move to us. We work over every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside breakdowns around Kingsbury

Not everyone finds a decent spot to stop. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge of Stewart Close, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Safe where you are? Remain beside it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. Never start up the engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into your fuel system. A van coming to an awkward spot is no trouble for us, and it's much better for your car than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull in, then see this

under 3 miles from Kingsbury, your M1 is what counts now. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.

All about Kingsbury

Kingsbury is a suburban area in northwest London, situated approximately 7.6 miles from the city centre. Kingsbury has a relatively low elevation of around 50 metres and is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Kingsbury is located near several other suburban areas, including The Hyde, West Hendon, and Wembley Park, and is home to a population of around 9878 people.

When our technicians arrive with you around Kingsbury: what follows

  • Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • We empty your tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running properly.

That leaves your car ready to pull away. We do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Kingsbury

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas this problem underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around Kingsbury has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

Kingsbury prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One figure wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely get to your car and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Kingsbury motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt in Kingsbury. Can you drain the car here?

A big part of this work happens there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site consents: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It is fixable far more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later. This is recoverable from much more regularly than people fear, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
