Petrol in Diesel

Kingshill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Kingshill and the remainder of Wiltshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. One call our way is sufficient: our engineers shall tell you what comes next. Do this first.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave your ignition off too. Diesel does two roles: it ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.
  • Do not thin it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to handle, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Andover Street? Hazards on, then keep it there. An odd spot works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting SN1 5, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if the engine has been run. Your responses settle whatever happens next.

Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan sitting at Swindon this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked weakened diesel through your pump was the journey in. Ring us before you set off to fetch the vehicle.

The enquiry our engineers like goes like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a couple of litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now turned off at Belvoir. What we're really asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and generally it won't run, so the motorist stops there and the wear stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing fires up, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection your fuel is meant to be providing. That is the trap, and it's why the diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed entirely ordinary coming back from Robert Le Kyng Primary School. They always do. From behind the wheel there is nothing to alert you about, so nothing alerts you. Ring us with approximately how far you went, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that is how that run to GWR Park went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the close-fitting components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Peugeot 3008 drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere safe, turn off and ring us.

Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That is a misfilled diesel Mercedes A-Class telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by Sir Daniel Gooch or anywhere else, and never start it to find a better location.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Kingshill

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of this job begins at the pump, meaning a large portion of that is completed at one. The drain normally happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the site's permission, that is a place our technicians work, and often.

Before the motor has started — a garage is the only place the mistake gets stopped. We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Coverage around Kingshill

Those same runs carry us to Even Swindon, Swindon, New Town, Okus and Bridgemead along with Kingshill, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns around Wiltshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing about whether our technicians come. On the boundary, or somewhere your phone can't find? Ring us and ask instead of assuming.

Look at this map for the area shown on this page. We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

Roadside call-outs across Kingshill

The opportunity to stop anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and ended up by the verge on Westcott Place, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Fine there? Stay with it. Not fine? Step out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Driving on does your car far more harm than our van heading out to a tricky location, and that's no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and your car has travelled

under 3 miles out of Kingshill, your M4 is what counts here. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they come are generally lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Get off at the first safe junction, switch off, and do not restart the car to move it. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring changes.

Kingshill itself

Kingshill is a suburban area in Wiltshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 98 metres, with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Kingshill lies within commuting distance of major cities, including Oxford, which is approximately 26.7 miles away, and London, which is around 71.8 miles to the east. Kingshill is part of the larger urban landscape of Swindon, with nearby areas including Even Swindon and New Town. Kingshill has a population of around 9684 people, making it a sizeable residential community.

What our technicians do when our technicians reach you around Kingshill

  • The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
  • That tank is emptied of it.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • The system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • Our engineers start it and check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and because everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Kingshill AdBlue removal is a separate problem

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — don't fire it up — but the problem is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication the system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Kingshill page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Kingshill

One number would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much your tank takes.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us the car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Kingshill

Fuel drains on a Kingshill petrol station forecourt

Much of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. What settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more commonly than drivers fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. The pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, as we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

You, and the car, still together?

Leave it turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle afterwards. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
