Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kingston

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in the tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Kingston or the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before anything else starts, so you'll hear what comes next.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never fire it up — and don't rely on it if it does start. Here is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel typically just will not run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for a few miles. It's not all right. It's eating into that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off also. Diesel performs two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime your system, which carries the petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Langford Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a car that never shifted.
  • The van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode starting PO2 7, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you call.
  • What got in, roughly how much, plus if the car has started — these three facts shape the full job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Clio, left outside Fratton since breakfast? The day has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is inert. It was the drive in that pulled diluted diesel through the pump. Ring us before you fetch it.

You will be advised to move it clear of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. On the zig-zags at Penbridge Junior School, a misfilled Peugeot 3008 running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Crank it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime drags more petrol past your filter toward your pump. Let them moan. Phone us.

What we will ask is whether that drive there was brief and cold, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and what won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Ford Kuga sitting in the parking area by The Stag holding a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing worsens whilst it stands, and so park it overnight and phone us first thing.

The pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Mercedes A-Class did on the way to Kingston Recreation Ground, none of that is going on now. Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Take your time over this — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy any.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left near St Wilfrid. For a diesel Kia Sportage whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, and let the car stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the fuel lines get rinsed and not just that tank emptied.

Can petrol be taken from a diesel at a forecourt?

A big chunk of the work gets finished at a forecourt, since that is where it usually begins. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you are still at Esso that is usually where the drain gets done.

The forecourt is the single setting this can be stopped before your motor has run. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and your lines along with the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where the car is. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The attendants will usually offer to push it away from the pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing. Shifting the car four bays does not warrant firing the motor.

Service near Kingston

Being a residential suburb, Kingston sees a regular call, whilst the areas nearby come with it on that same trip: Portsea Island and Buckland, North End and Copnor, Landport.

Our engineers still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns in Hampshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. On the boundary, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Ring us and ask instead of assuming.

Look at our map for the ground included on this page. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your car doesn't need to come to us.

Stranded by the kerbside anywhere in Kingston?

The chance to stop anywhere sensible doesn't come to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and finished up on the verge of Burleigh Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Whether you sit beside the vehicle or keep clear of it depends on if staying nearby seems wise. Don't restart it to reach a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into the system. However inconvenient the place, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for your car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

under a mile from Kingston, the M275 is what counts here. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you ring. It alters what we bring.

Kingston itself

Kingston is a suburban area located on the coast of Hampshire, situated near the city of Portsmouth on Portsea Island. Kingston sits at a low elevation of around 9 metres, with its terraced housing stock reflecting its historical development as a residential area. Kingston is close to other nearby places such as Buckland and North End, and is part of the larger Portsmouth urban area. Kingston has a population of approximately 18,022 residents.

When we reach you in Kingston: what we do

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The polluted fuel comes out of that tank.
  • What is left in the fuel system should not be what caused the trouble, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and bleed the system.
  • Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Kingston

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — while the fault underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Kingston page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Kingston

Our engineers can't put one price on this page truthfully, as this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from Kingston motorists

At a petrol station in Kingston, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more regularly than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate fault and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened. Your pump still has to put up with it, because the tank still has petrol in it after that.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Don't turn the car back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Hampshire and in Kingston: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
