Kingstone: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet started, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Across Kingstone and the rest of Herefordshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. A single call to us is sufficient: our team will show you what follows next. Try it first.
The first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Do not fire it up — and don't believe it if it runs. This is the bit drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel usually just will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and moves off just fine for a few miles. It's not okay. It's wearing out the fuel system whenever you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: turning it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies — so do not add diesel on top to water down it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- A car that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on St Michaels Close? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A difficult place suits us better than a started diesel.
- Keep your position prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning HR2 9 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.
- Three replies determine your whole visit: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate measure of it, and if anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through your high-pressure fuel pump in real volume on the trip in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Ring us — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over the BMW 3 Series outside Hereford whilst the work gets done, and our team would very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.
Hazards on. Motor off. Phone. It's twenty to nine by Kingstone and Thruxton Primary School, you're late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and though three miles in the Audi A4 feels like nothing, fuel gets delivered to demand, and a frantic run asks for plenty of that.
Simple job, this one — till someone drives it home. A diesel Kia Sportage parked at The Bull Ring with petrol in your tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, and so leave it then phone us once it's light. Expect a question about the trip there, though. Brief and chilly is exactly where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can work past the rings then into the oil.
Out there happy, back flat. If that was the drive to Nell's Wood, look at that tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the fine tolerances meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Volkswagen Touran covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, call us.
Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres resting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger blend rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly nobody knows how full the tank was in a car collected two days ago, and our engineers work that out on site. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to approve the work, and that's far faster settled before than after. Then call us about the Citroen Berlingo by Kingstone Village Hall.
Can petrol be drained out of your diesel on the forecourt?
Most of the work begins at a pump, so a big part of that gets finished there. If you are still at the forecourt at Shell, that is usually where this drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.
At a forecourt, it gets halted with your engine never run, and no place else does that. We can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key are what determine that.
The staff will usually happily move it away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get through. It is worth doing. Firing the car to move four vehicle lengths is not.
Kingstone plus the towns next to it
Brookfield, Great Brampton, Thruxton, Cockyard, Hungerstone — each of these on our trips that take us across to Kingstone as well, a rural village.
Our engineers do come. The names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places around Herefordshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Near the border, or anywhere your satnav can't find? Ring us and enquire instead of presuming.
Look at the map for the patch included here. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the car doesn't need to travel to us.
Kingstone: broken down where you pulled up
Some drivers find no sensible spot to pull over at all. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Green Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that is a normal call for us and not an unusual one.
Out of the motor when it's not sensible to sit in it, beside it when it is. Do not fire it up to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into your fuel system. However inconvenient the spot, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than driving on.
Run it already? Stop, and check below
under 15 miles from Kingstone, the M50 is what matters now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.
Pull off at the next safe junction, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring alters.
Where's Kingstone?
Kingstone is a small village in Herefordshire, situated approximately 6 miles west of Hereford, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Kingstone sits in a low-lying area of the county, with an elevation of around 95 metres, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Brookfield and Great Brampton. Kingstone is a rural community with a population of around 753 residents, and is located about 121 miles west of London. Kingstone remains a quiet, residential area with a strong sense of community.
Our job in Kingstone, step by step
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses change what the work actually is.
- Your tank is emptied completely.
- What is left in your system should not be what caused the trouble, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleared.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
- It's started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running properly.
That has it ready to pull away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been caught early, and as everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.
A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Kingstone
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — while this issue underneath it is a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.
Both are ours. There's a separate Kingstone page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
Kingstone pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our technicians cannot put one number on this page honestly, since this job is not one job. What moves it:
- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.
Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Kingstone
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Kingstone?
Yes, and it's where a big share of this work takes place. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Murco is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. What determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A drain then flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a different issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.
Standing next to it?
Keep the engine shut off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
