Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Kingswood? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Kingswood and the remainder of Cheshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Call us before everything else begins, so you will learn what follows from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Do not start the car — and never trust it when it starts. That is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel normally just will not run, so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing out that fuel system while you drive.
  • Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is often sufficient to prime that system, which draws the petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so don't tip diesel on top to water down it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we would rather get to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Tucana Close, switch those hazards on then leave it there.
  • Before you dial, get your location. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts WA5 8 — that's what determines whether our van arrives or circles.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, roughly how much, and also if the car has fired. Those three replies shape the full call-out.

Quarter past eight. A fast fill-up on the drive in. At about eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Passat has stood outside Warrington West for three hours. Ring us and leave the vehicle where it is. What counts is the drive in, because diesel both burns and — before that — lubricates your pump and your injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those couple of miles ran the pump on a fluid stripped of a great deal of its protection, and no amount of sitting in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the question about miles instead of hours standing, and hence the instruction to leave your keys be till we turn up.

Car parks like the one at Asda are somewhere our engineers work in regularly, and your fuel is rarely the difficult part. That bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height barrier on the way in that settles whether a van can reach you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way your car is facing. If our technicians cannot work next to your diesel Renault Clio we will roll it without starting it — and that is not pedantry about a few seconds of running. Any start primes that fuel system and sucks more of the blend out of that tank and toward your pump, so a vehicle moved twice into a better space has gradually grown into a harder job than one left precisely where it stopped.

Nothing alerts you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt perfectly usual on the way back from St Philip (Westbrook) CofE Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump does its work without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Whatever your diesel Audi A3 did on the way to Carina Park, it's doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but never drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since the pump is ahead of the injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it sheds on with the fuel. Call us. Leave the Ford Kuga by Saint Philip.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Kingswood

Clearing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

It starts at the pump, usually. Frequently it ends at one too. We operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, and so if you're still at BP that is generally where this drain gets done.

Before the motor has fired — the forecourt is the one location this ends up spotted. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the vehicle. Worth doing. Rolling the car four spaces does not merit firing the engine.

Do our engineers cover your side of Kingswood?

These same journeys get us to Westbrook, Gemini, Callands, Old Hall and Hood Manor as well as Kingswood, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places across Cheshire, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing about if we come. Ring us to ask instead of assuming, above all where you're on a boundary or somewhere your satnav can't find.

The area this page includes is on this map. The vehicle does not need to move to us. We work throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Roadside call-outs around Kingswood

Not everyone finds a safe place to pull over. If you realised after setting off and finished up along the verge on Carina Park, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a routine call for us and not an unusual one.

Whether you remain with the vehicle or stand clear of it depends on whether being in it is sensible. Don't fire it up to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into your fuel system. A technician heading to an awkward place is no problem for us, and it is far better for the car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has travelled

This is where the local M62 matters, under a mile from Kingswood. A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and never start the car to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

Kingswood itself

Kingswood is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated inland at an elevation of 18 metres, and is located approximately 14 miles from Liverpool. Kingswood is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting the area's residential nature. Kingswood sits near other local places such as Westbrook, Gemini, and Callands, and is home to around 2739 residents. Kingswood is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of approximately 169 miles.

What we do when our technicians arrive with you in Kingswood

  • Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled from your tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that started the problem.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted early, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Kingswood?

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — don't crank it — but the problem isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Kingswood page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Kingswood?

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page frankly, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in Kingswood

At a petrol station in Kingswood, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work takes place. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our engineers answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep the car off. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more often than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Standing next to it?

Do not turn your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists assume, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
