Petrol in Diesel

Kinneil: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car needs while the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Kinneil or the remainder of Falkirk, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. A single ring to us is sufficient: we can explain what comes after this. Do this first.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Do not start it. Fired up all the same? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically can't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that backwards. It is not okay — that fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of the tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes — so don't pour diesel on top to water down it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Chestnut Grove, anywhere — a tricky place for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a car that never moved.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts EH51 0, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has fired. These three replies shape the whole visit.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel on a forecourt?

A large portion of this job ends up completed at a pump, because that is where it often kicks off. The drain normally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the station's permission, that's a place our technicians work, and regularly.

The forecourt is the one place this can be spotted before your motor has run. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Kinneil

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Passat, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at Scotmid now. Time elapsed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.

Each restart primes the lines and draws more petrol through the filter then into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by the local primary school is a hassle, whereas the same vehicle started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. Somebody will advise you to shift it out of the gateway and sort it out later. Do not. Stay put, let everyone grumble, then phone us.

The components that should be getting oiled are wearing instead, and your car gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and moves off perfectly well. Try the trip home from Newtown Bar? No. Call us then leave the Audi A4 where it sits.

Three things help when you ring from near Kinneil Guardian Gate Sculpture: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest location our engineers work, and so the spot itself is seldom the trouble — we would much rather deal with a tight parking space than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Peugeot 3008, change the fuel filter where there is a workable one, flush the lines then put fresh fuel through the entire circuit, since by this point the worst of that is resting in your lines rather than in that tank.

Flushed, not drained — that is what a diesel BMW 5 Series which got as far as James Watt Cottage needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with that tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

Parts our vans serve around Kinneil

As a residential suburb, Kinneil sees a steady visit, while the areas close by go with it on the same round: Castleloan and Maidenpark, Deanfield and Borrowstoun Mains, Corbiehall.

Our technicians do come. The places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations across Falkirk, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Ring us to ask rather than guessing, especially when you are on a boundary or anywhere a satnav struggles with.

The area this page includes is on the map. Every bit of it is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move the car anywhere.

Stranded on the roadside somewhere around Kinneil?

The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe does not fall to everybody. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Fairspark Terrace because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Remain by the motor if it's wise to sit inside, and out of the car when it isn't. Never fire it up to reach a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mixture deeper into the system. We will send the van to an awkward spot without any bother, and for the car that is far better than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and your car has gone

Here is where the local M9 counts, under 3 miles out of Kinneil. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

Don't start it to move it. Pull off at the first safe junction then switch off. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

Where is Kinneil?

Kinneil is a suburban area in Falkirk, situated on the coast of Scotland at an elevation of 41 metres. Kinneil lies near several smaller communities, including Castleloan, Maidenpark, and Deanfield, and is within commuting distance of Dunfermline. Kinneil is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the typical residential development patterns of Scottish suburban areas. Kinneil is located approximately 342 miles northwest of London, making it a relatively distant outlier of the UK's urban core.

What our engineers do when our engineers get to you around Kinneil

  • Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Out comes the tainted mixture.
  • Our technicians rinse the lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in your system is not what created the trouble.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • It's started with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running properly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Kinneil?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the issue underneath it's a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Kinneil page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Kinneil

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what varies it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank holds.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Kinneil motorists

At a petrol station around Kinneil, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this gets done. Our technicians work at Hastons of Bo'ness and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It is recoverable much more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, as our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Still with your vehicle?

Turned off is the way it remains.

Turn it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.
